A few months back Dieselmonkey suggested the idea of a Spanish Civil War game to me...

He thought a game on an urban site where *everyone* dressed in 40s civvies and played either Republicans (pro communist) or Nationalists (pro fascist).

To make it even more interesting he suggested that only pistols and rifles be allowed as the SMG was very very rare at the time.

While not *strictly* WWII it is really one of the touch papers of the conflict and where the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe got to experiment with tactics and new equipment and most nations of the world sent volunteers to aid one side or the other (i believe George Orwell fought in it).

May even be a place for the odd German 'advisor'.

Personally I think it would be fun and the dynamics of pistol and rifle fire only would be quite unique.

Seem like a good idea?

i might even purchase a bolt action rifle for this( i assume they would have used a lot of hunting type weapons, therefore almost any bolt action would be ok??????)

I think it's a cool idea. George Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia" is a good read and a brilliant reference book which sums up the FUBAR nature of the whole thing. This must be the ultimate niche airsoft battle :D-- attachment is not available --

Hunting rifles im sure would have been used as would shotguns and the like

(i'm sure a SCW expert wil now shoot me down :) )

A few German Advisor's - there were over 14000 who had been there and marched past Dear old Adolf on 6th June 1939 in Berlin, when Legion Condor made their last public appearance led by GeneralMajor von Richthofen - including 3000 sailors and 1000 members of the army.

Not sure I could source the uniform tho, have a source for the insignia and own jackboots lol

The Communist / Anarchist side is a lot easier to portray. They used literally anything they could get.

EDIT

On our third morning in Alcubierre the rifles arrived. A sergeant with a coarse dark-yellow face was handing them out in the mule-stable. I got a shock of dismay when I saw the thing they gave me. It was a German Mauser dated 1896- more than forty years old! It was rusty, the bolt was stiff, the wooden barrel-guard was split; one glance down the muzzle showed that it was corroded and past praying for. Most of the rifles were equally bad, some of them even worse, and no attempt was made to give the best weapons to the men who knew how to use them. The best rifle of the lot, only ten years old, was given to a half-witted little beast of fifteen, known to everyone as the maricoon (Nancy-boy). The sergeant gave us five minutes' 'instruction', which consisted in explaining how you loaded a rifle and how you took the bolt to pieces. Many of the militiamen had never had a gun in their hands before, and very few, I imagine, knew what the sights were for. Cartridges were handed out, fifty to a man, and then the ranks were formed and we strapped our kits on our backs and set out for the front line, about three miles away.

Homage to Catalonia - George Orwell

Thats quite interesting.

I'm actually just guessing at the 'plan white' get up being the same as for the spanish civil war.

Glad there's a bit of interest in this, the SCW's always been of personal interest, as i had a distant relative who fought in the International Brigades (as an anarchist) and survived.

He died long before i was able to talk to him about it, but to travel to another country, as a civilian, and join a foreign civil war, just on the strength of his political beliefs meant he must have been a very strong character.

Anyway, as regards weapons, i guess a few thompsons would have been around (i've seen a couple of photos of them), but predominatly, i imagine it'd have been old rifles and sidearms.

In an urban game, I think it'd be a fun mix of long range sniping and close up shootouts.

I think you'd see more brave charges and as you say some exciting close range pistol duels!
