As someone with absolutely no military experience I quite like it when the tactical decisions in a game are made by commanders or squad NCOs rather than freestyling for the whole day. It also adds to the whole "immersion" thing for me. I also don't mind if the person giving orders is a twat as that's probably quite realistic too
So - throwing it out to the forum, what do others feel about getting bossed around on the battlefield?
I generally prefer to be told what to do, in fact I quite like it.
However I do think who ever is in charge should be open to suggestions in some situations.

Agreed - I've seen this work well but I've also seen some Alpha Male type clashes which just ended up taking time out of the game.
Absolutely needs to be a chain of command. I don't think military experience comes into it just needs common sense as it is airsoft after all.

don't have a problem following orders and when it all goes wrong, you have some one else to blame
I love chain of command and think its a great adition to a game but needs the right peeps doing it. Most important is to remember that the guys your giving orders to are your equal and not your beatches
I always try to have marshals in the roll of command so the're their to make sure all the punters get the most out of command, its stil not full proof as I found at D-Day+2 where the Allied commander was to military and pissed a few guys off with his attitude...quite word in his ear and the next day he was spot on but still needed a prod in the right direction.
CIA top brass have a great top end for command as does PBI, that I know from their help with the D-Day games and playing with them in the field, but know idea what the nco side is like though? who in my opinion are as important as the high command.
Fortunately for me I have had 15 years experience of running games (not just airsoft) that require commanders giving orders to mates in a field for tactical and role play reasons so I understand the frustration of some that look for it in a game when others don't.
hope this helps

I'm quite happy to be told what to do (unless its go home ). Often at games you will find me patrolling my set area as designated by the Squad leader only to be left behind by those that chase the sounds of gunfire (which leaves me as a 1-man ambush or defence force
)
Its all down to personal preference but I think a structured squad really gives you the best out of skirmishing.
I believe we should be given our jobs to do. Having squad leaders, commanders, is a great way to keep the game flowing and for everyone to enjoy the experience. There's alot of indecision and confusion in airsoft, which results in people loosing sight of the overall objective.
Aslong as the orders are given in a polite manner then i have no problem.
Only person who's voted no so far
Whilst I'm happy enough following orders, unless it's critical to follow them, I have a habit of scouting out ahead more. (although if ordered to scout out something, I would do so without problem!)
Most of my loadouts are based around advanced scouts, using a bolt action rifle or an smg, spotting enemy positions/movements/objectives and guiding in friendly forces to the best position to attack (tricky without radios though lol, lots of running). Also enjoy playing as a medic so long as I'm not forced to stand behind the same guy for half a day!
Occasionally I'll use a support weapon and do what i'm asked though, but I prefer to have a certain degree of freedom. However, as i've not yet been to a proper ww2 skirmish, I probably will completely change my opinion when I do! (All the events/skirmishes I've been to that have attempted to do a command/order system have generally failed to do it well!)
command is just about giving orders but also finding out what you troopers want to do and are good at, then put them in the inviroments they shine in. Not boss you around or make you do stuff you dont want to do. After all you have paid money to have fun. Command can accoadate for all players. Or atleast try to, depending on the battle plan.
hope that changes your mind

I run a site and have decided to get 60 people playing the same game is like herding cats
A chain of command is a must to keep games moving, but remember give somebody an inch and they will take a yard
in game marshalls work for me and are an asset to any site.
Is it coz I is Welsh

Your all fekin bonkers
Coming from re-enactment/living history background after 6 odd years with the 2nd battle group i agree that there should be a command structure.I have only been doing airsoft for a VERY short time but when i did Carentan the American and Brit sides were in well organised squads but the german side seemed to be more isolated into small groups or small pockets of mates banding together(not that they didn't fight very well)as was proved on the Sunday with all the objectives that were met against overwhelming odds.I have yet to see other big events that will probably be completely different and prove me wrong. The events that i have attend i have a thoroughly enjoyed but i do sometimes miss taking command of a squad and acting as one solid unit. But the person who is in charge should be open to suggestions.
Peiper.
Can only speak for the CiA, PBI and F & O games I've attended, all of which have had some chain of command. I'm quite happy to take orders and be told what to do (within reason ) I do think however the person doing the commands should have some presence and know what they're doing, theres nothing worse than having to follow someone whose not taken on board the original game plan/higher orders and bimble around in the wrong direction, boring and frustrating.
Oh and I found at Husky I loikes shouting them too was I any good, feck knows
I enjoyed it which was all that mattered to me pmsl, I mean how often does a lady (yes I'm one

I do hope ever so much for your benefit that you are not insinuating that I am akin to JSP or death will come very slowly and painfully to you
In response to Pete, there are worse "girls" on this forum than me shouting when I feel like it and thats just thinking of the chaps

Not at all. I had the misfortune to work for her briefly and "OY DON' WANNER HEAR IT" was her mantra (she wasn't what you'd call a People Person).
I voted for taking orders. Depending on my role in the game, I can take orders or give them, although I agree with what was said about presence. I know several civvie guys that are competent airsofters but have no idea about how to "bark" orders. In a firefight, wether you're a gunner or infantryman you need to clearly hear and understand the info that the troop commander is trying to convey to you.
Being a military man and hav'ing grown up with a military background, takeing orders comes as second nature to me, but I have worked with some complete idiots on deployment in Afghan and Iraq that I just can't trust the chain of command to get it right, I'm an effective sniper but I need free range to do the job, and in modern skirmish I can get my team moving but shouting and leading from the front.
Like others have said, those that will be leading us in combat need to have an open mind and trust the troops to take over if they can't see the situation.
"Will you stop talking about the war!!"
"What, you started it!"
"We did NOT start it!"
"Yes you did, you invaded Poland..."
