Cheers for all the advice/views guys. I think I'll be getting a helmet - I may not keep it on all weekend but at least I'll have a choice and I'll need it for other games anyhow. :D

Thanks for the info, Jay. Well, this is what I've got - I suspect it's rubbish!

The trouble is, the helmet does tend to move around, but when I tighten the string, it just sits on the top of my head looking ridiculous.

What do I need and from where?

Andy , yours' looked about the right size shell for your head , it maybe the liners the wrong size.
It took me two attempts to get it right .

M1 helmets are great. One size fits all, they're bloody comfortable, light and the outline can be easily broken up by scrim or foliage.

Steiner,
I had a similiar problem with mine. Couldn't afford to buy a new liner at the time. What I did was cut some strips from an old Karrimoor sleeping mat and duct taped it to the steel liner under the leather. Works a treat, so much so that I haven't bothered with getting a new liner.

Thanks Guy - the liner says it's 59, and my attempt at measuring my head came out with 58. But for me, the M1 just balances much better. Probably a genuine Jerry pot would too, being heavier.

Kermit, what's the best source for liners mate?

out of curiousity  do they do helmets that wouldn't look excessively silly on my 54cm head? I note theres the liner size..but a difference of 6cm's between the smallest lid and my head seems HUGE to me and I fear I could be dwarfed by one   any suggestions ? (that would be other than borrowing actions mans helmet that Che suggested

I would have thought you would look more 'normal' than most Helga - modern heads are huge compared with WW2 sizes.

Yea - go for it .
You could always crop the picture to avoid the boots .
Theres nowt like getting all dressed up in your German uniform in the middle of the day for an impromtu photoshoot, and then having it answer the door to sign for a parcel

Think I've done it - used a foam / velcro system in my lad's old BMX helmet and stuck it to the metal ring inside the leather liner. No more wobbly helmet for me!

I wore my M35 helmet all day at the Bridge too bloody far. No problems. I would probably have worn it in bed the following night if my partner was a little more broad minded :D

It's not supposed to be an M35 helmet in bed. It's supposed to be a leather flying helmet and some wet celery.....
