Well yesterday....

Had a major dubbining session on all my leather equipment including rifle slings and some minor equipment straps which hadn't been done for a while, re-did all my boots including the soles and replaced some missing hobnails.

Also did some gun cleaning, surprising amount of crap came out of a couple of them and tested my new battery charger which replaced (yet another one) which blew. These days I always try and keep two working ones. I also discovered my wood oil has dried up so I need get some more, in the iterim I treated the rifle stocks with beeswax.

All very satisfying even if the back room did look like a combined army surplus shop and arms fair for a time.

I also finally got around to painting my Heer belt buckle feldgrau, I've noticed how it sticks out like a sore thumb in a number of pictures.

Cheers
Martin

Checked the barrel of my Luger and found it jam-packed with BBs, packed solid. This will take some doing...

Made a good start on sorting out my kit for Monte la Difensa. Also did a bit of work on my M14/G43/SVT40 lo cap magazines and now they actually fit without falling out.

Cheers

Watched the planes and had a picnic yesterday, great fun.

I liked the Storch, it flew slowly and thus amused me.

Changed a track link on the tank and bled the steering brakes with my new vacuum brake bleeder seems to do the trick so steering should be more sharp.

Dubbed my SOF ammo boots; natural on the soles and black on the uppers. I can see the stuff drying into the soles but the uppers are just greasy. They're on the back steps drying; this being Scotland, not so much in the sun as not in the rain. Also blanco'd my gaiters. Batteries currently charging for a trip to Players of War at Bonnybridge tomorrow; if I can drag my carcass out of my pit early on a Sunday.

Try using a hair dryer. Dubbin doesn't dry out, it soaks in - so heat helps liquefy the grease and gets drawn in by the leather fibres. In times past one would use fingers to work it in, the warmth of the hand assisting application. Too messy for me - apply generously with a toothbrush paying particular attention to seams and joins, drive in with heat from hairdryer. Repeat. Wipe of excess on surface, if any.

Actually, last week I...
Had a holiday on the Suffolk coast. Wifelet booked an nice old cottage on the estate of Bawdsey Manor. Turns out Bawdsey Manor is the home of WW2 radar research and the transmitter block was 100 yards from us. I caught one of the infrequent open days (all done by volunteers) and managed to bore wiflet to tears :giggle: There is also a big underground nuclear-safe command bunker for the Bloodhound missile system still there but not open to the public unfortunately. The Manor, now a school and conference centre, still seems to be using the ww2 gatehouse and I found an MoD sign lurking still.

Threadlocked and oiled my MP40 after a full service. Just the hop to be fitted and it's 100% complete.

i used a cheap Vanrez tight bore on mine and with the hop mod it transforms the gun ,really well worth doing but i cant tell if the tight bore made a lot of difference but the hop made a huge difference.

Yeah I'm going with a semi-tightbore (smaller than the standard barrel but still wider than a real tightbore) for now as I'm not expecting monster range on it. It'll probably take a while to bed the hop in on midcaps though. Only the motor is untouched on my MP40 now! every single part has either been replaced in the gearbox with higher spec parts or been refinished with blueing. Only a couple more things I'd like to do on it now, recolour the arms on the stock and either oil blue the barrel or have a steel one machined. I've got fixes coming for the slight wobble in the body and the huge wobble on the stock too.
Started a full strip down and rebuild of my 1911 today, need to fix the leaky seals and give the valves a bit of attention. I was contemplating blueing the whole thing but I'm not sure if they were all parkerised? Most museum examples I've seen are so worn it could've been either.
