I recently went through some of my stock ( junk!) found various water bottles, some needed a good cleanout.
Coca Cola is a good cleaner, left in overnight, cleans aluminium up very good, another is a spoonful of sand, a drop of water, and then a fair good shaking for some time, cleans a lot of flakey crap out.
Bicarbonate of soda is another good one along the lines of the coke trick.
Some time ago, on a Brit steel enamel water bottle, I cleaned up the inside, then sealed it off with fibreglass resin, took a while to set, but when it did, it lasted a few years, I don't remember getting rid of it, so it's possible I still have it somewhere.

If you have any trouble cleaning the Brit ones you can get a sandwich bag ,insert it into the bottle and fill the bag with water ,then bouble it back over the bottle neck and secure with an elastic band and Kork it as normal.

Give me a big enough hammer and a place to stand and I could fix the world.
