Those that access the forum using mobile phones will have been previously automatically switched to a forum skin more suited to the small screen. This gave a font size that was easily read, removed graphics to speed up downloading and save money for those with limited data plans.

Now, while it worked very well it wasn't particularly pretty and while users should simply use 'View unread posts' for quick update of what's new, many seem not to know of it's function. But more than that, browsing on a big with many sub-section isn't the most intuitive experience, especially if you are not aware of the structure. So, I have removed this forum skin but now users will see that viewing the forum with the normal interface ain't very good either requiring much zooming in, zooming out, and scrolling. And page loading is slow too, unsurprisingly as you are no longer using broadband.

However, I have put in place a system using an external service provider, Tapatalk. This is available for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Nokia and Windows Phone 7.

iPhone, Android and WP7 have a free 'lite' version you can download from App Store/Android Market/Marketplace so give it a whirl for a while and see what you think. If it works for you then the full/Pro version is available for $2.99 and gives added functionality.
Blackberry and Nokia users can download the full version for free as it is currently in beta.

iPhone & Android & Blackberry & Nokia - search for 'Tapatalk'. Once the app is installed then look for 'Comrades in Arms' forum.
WP7 users have a different app - look for 'Board Express'. Once the app is installed then look for 'Comrades in Arms' forum.

Tapatalk
Tapatalk is a mobile forum app for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia. Tapatalk supports vBulletin, phpBB, IPB and SMF forums and forum owner can activate this service for free. Cool beans. I'm using WP7 and it seems fine. A couple of small niggles but the s/w and o/s is very new. I'd urge peeps to try before they buy - regardless of platform.

No problems with how it worked when you switched it to the 'normal' forum on my iPhone. It worked brilliantly! Shame others had problems....

EDIT: Ah, the 'normal' forum still works on my mobile browser....excellent.

Daft bugger - the whole point is that I have given mobile users an option for slickness and speed now, not made it mandatory. Those that are happy with the proper CiA forum style and using a web browser on their mobile are welcome to carry on using it. I'm not!

Yeah, didn't realise it was either or.....thought you had reverted back to the old one and offered the App as a better experience.

The Tapatalk system is a standalone app that pulls the forum data from the db and presents it in simple way - it does away with all the baggage of a web browser and doesn't require your device to read, process and draw a page like a web browser does. So, its much faster moving from screen to screen, thread to thread.

For the best forum experience and easy browsing and heavyweight use a PC/Mac and a broadband connection, for keeping up to speed and posting/reading on the move then a mobile in your pocket is a usable solution and even easier/quicker with Tapatalk.

I quite like the tapatalk access to the forum.

Thanks for setting it up.

I do use the 'normal' version if out in a wi-fi capture zone, but actually not had issues with the forum over 3G either

More routes into CiA the better :D

I ran a trial of it a year or more ago when it first came out but there was a lot it couldn't do and was more frustrating than a solution to a problem so I abandoned it. However, it's much improved now and progress being made all the time - I'd imagine it would be easier for them if there was only one operating system and one forum type!

Update:

The Tapatalk system can now be used on Windows 6.x devices (such as the HTC HD2) using the 'RapidRead' app which is currently free during beta.

This adds to the iPhone/iPad, Android, webOS, Windows Phone 7, Blackberry and Nokia platform solutions already available.

The Tapatalk system is now integrated on 13,000 forums worldwide, including those run on phpBB3, vBulletin, IPBoard, and Simple Machines (coming soon WoltLab Burning Board).

Update:

For those that use the Chrome web browser on Mac or PC Tapatalk Notifier is a useful FREE tool I've been finding.
Whether you have the WW2 Airsoft Forum site open or not the notifier will alert you immediately if you have a Private Message waiting or alerts to subscribed topics. Click on the notification and you will jump straight to the forum page or inbox without having to open the site in a tab.
Saves a click or two, saves a bit of time, never miss a post or PM!
And of course works for any other forum that uses Tapatalk you are registered to.

(Off topic, but I use the eBay extension for Chrome in exactly the same way https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/khhckppjhonfmcpegdjdibmngahahhck )

UPDATE:

The Tapatalk app is currently free - Tapatalk 2 for Android in the Amazon App Store, Tapatalk 4 (beta) in Google Play and Tapatalk for iOS in the Apple App Store. I have a feeling that ads are now being served though :(

Board Express that runs on the Tapatalk sytem is a paid-for app for Windows Phone 7, 7.5 and 8 - with no ads. A native Tapatalk app will be available in coming days.

Sorry Tapatalk users - I've removed the functionality from the forum. After a lot of trial and error I discovered it was this that gave very slow page loading times.

I'm looking for a solution and will bring Tapatalk back as soon as I can.
