right, ive got my standard m36 tunic all badged up with white infantry piping on green s/boards, breast eagle, EM collar bars and an Iron Cross 2nd class ribbon on the second button hole (came free with the tunic) Now i dont want to go over board with the badges and patches, but id like something on my sleeves or on my breast pocket. Nothing too fancy, and something that wouldnt look out of place, maybe something like the sniper badge or a rank. What would you guys recomend, if any?
Cheers
Everyone goes overboard on insignia when they get bitten by the bug
The Heer had four ranks of private soldier:
Schütze
Oberschütze
Gefreiter
Obergefreiter
The last three have insignia that go on the left shoulder. These are not NCO ranks - they hold no authority over lower ranks of EM, they simply indicated the level of service and experience that soldier had, which was handy for officers who found themselves commanding men they didn't know.
There are also trade badges for various specialist roles, sniper, signaller, etc.
You also have a whole host of tin badges and campaign cufftitles to choose from. Infantry Assault badge and Wound badge were pretty common. Lots of info on these awards can be found on http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/
My first Heer tunic looked like a christmas tree when I started. Since then I've thinned the awards and badges down to things that either represent my actual experience or else have some kind of significance to me.
An oberschütze or gefreiter rank badge on the left sleeve might be a good choice. Oberschütze pips were given were awarded for 6-12 months of service, gefreiter for the same but having demonstrated leadership potential so both were pretty common. Would look good without being fancy or in anyway OTT.
I'd avoid the sniper badge completely- late war only and hardly worn as no one would want to advertise something that would likely get you shot out of hand. You have to remember the more insignia you add the more restrictive your uniform gets due to the introduction dates and limited issue of alot of awards.
Thanks buddy, i really want to stay away from the chrismas tree look, just want one or two tive give it a bit of character to it. Where abouts does the sniper specification badge go?
Edit: saw lardassmonkey's post about the sniper spec so ignore the last bit
Cheers
just seen a rather nice Krim Shield on epic. How does that fit in? were they later war and wouldnt fit on m36?

If your preferred style of gameplay really is sniping then go for it but I only know one player in CiA who genuinely plays a sniper role, the rest of us get bored of hiding in a bush after 10 minutes ![]()
Krim Shield:
http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/campaig ... s/krim.htm
100,000 awarded so not massively rare.
only thing about the krim shield is its 41-42 dated, would that be fine on M36 tunics? Also the one on epic has got a navy background, would i need a field grey backing for it?
Cheers
It would be ok on an M36 tunic as they were still around until the end of the war. However it does limit the accurate wear of the uniform to post July 42 when they were first issued. Yes you would need a different backing cloth to match your uniform and that badge also looks alot more gold than bronze to me (could just be the photo though).
Or you could ditch the Iron cross and join me in the plain old rubbishy private role. hurrah.
M36 can be used for any war period but the badge would only be "correct" for events set post-'42. I don't know anything about the Krim shield but generally it's best not to get too hung up on things like backing colour for insignia. The Wehrmacht used whatever they could get hold of. Look at archive pics of Heer troops and you'll see mismatches of everything from gaiters to shoulderboards. The only ones who are 100% colour-coded and shade-matched are certain reenactors who ought to know better.
See - even us lot can't agree on this stuff
Edit: Another thing to be aware of with campaign awards is that they often come with an unsavory history. Personally I'm uncomfortable with wearing things like Ostfront ribbons and Kreta cufftitles because of the way the German army behaved in those campaigns. But that's just me, lots of others are fine with them.
I'd recommend something that does not limit your tunic to a particular year or location, so Krim shield would be out.
Black wound badge - can't go wrong with that. ![]()

You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
Black wound badge - can't go wrong with that.
You can, if you haven't been wounded
Well we haven't sworn allegiance to Hitler either but we still like to wear all the clobber.
ok, so, i do really like the krim shield, but i will bow to greater experience on this one and leave it off (so as not to limit my options)
i think im going to go with Gefreiter chevron
http://www.epicmilitaria.com/product.ph ... dark-green
and possibly a black wound badge at a later date

Good choice.
With all the money you've saved you could even buy an original one

Infantry assault badge is another popular choice.
http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/war_bad ... ssault.htm
First issued in 1939 so correct for any period of the war, its a pretty common award, to earn one you had to do one of the following:
To have taken part in three or more infantry assaults.
To have taken part in three or more infantry counter-attacks.
To have taken part in three or more armed reconnaissance operations.
To have engaged in hand to hand combat in an assault position.
To have participated on three separate days in the restitution of combat positions.
So, award it to yourself after you have played at 3 WW2 events ![]()
“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."
Adolf Hitler, November 1942
"Comrades, Red Army men, commanders and political workers, men and women guerrillas! It is on your perseverance, staunchness, fighting skill and readiness to discharge your duty to the country that the defeat of the German-fascist army and the liberation of the Soviet land from the Hitlerite invaders depend! We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."
Joseph Stalin, November 1942

There is also the SISK badge, awarded in bronze, silver and gold. To qualify you need to have spent over 100 quid on an item of kit that you'll use maybe twice a year and/or spent a minimum of 30 hours of your employer's time pricing up all the extra crap you want to buy in order to make your loadout more "orfentic"
Most on here will have been awarded that. I wear mine over the empty wallet with oak leaves and clusters.

well if your gonna wear a Hugo Boss designed jacket, you need a bit of designer bling to go with it! ![]()
