I'm planning to attend this as Home Guard. Is anyone else?

I'm badging (I do love a badge) my BD as 3rd Glamorganshire (Bridgend) Bn - GLN 3, but will be aiming not to have to wear it!

I have a small skewer hidden in the collar of my jumping jacket, and a razorblade in my gaiter, as well as my knife.

Where are you getting your badges from?

Well I was thinking of the deal from Monty's Locker of a complete set for £15.00. I already have the DivPatch ones for my local battalion HTS 8. And they don't seem right, but having said that I'm not sure how authentic the woven one from Monty's Locker would be either. Is there anywhere else?

They should be printed, not woven, that's the key.

I have some contacts that may be able to make us some for not much. I will check.

Yes and no. I think the actual Home Guard patch was often woven while the battalion badges were printed.

Here's what came from Divpatch. To my mind the Home Guard patch just looks wrong even if you cut off the white border; it's a sort of plastic paint. I am growing to the battalion badges but I think the KD is wrong, too yellow, the paint is again plasticky and I have no idea why those little black dots are there; if you trim down to them the patch seems too small. And I think the number patch should be a different shape to the letter.-- attachment is not available --

I've ordered the set from Monty's Locker - I'll post 'em up when they arrive.

Yes, colour looks wrong to me. The font probably wrong is as well. I say that not because I know that it is, but that it's a common fault.

As far as I remember both should be printed. I have the Home Guard "bible" at home and will double check.

The little dots show you where to fold them. You don't cut along them, but neatly fold to hide the dots and then iron the patches to have nice edges and then machine sew them onto your bd. If doing hand stitching do a back-stitch with as small stitches as you can be arsed to do.

I'll be using my sewing machine...

And on this link they definitely are.

http://media.iwm.org.uk/iwm/mediaLib/25 ... /large.jpg

But other searches have shown printed. I don't think there is a definitive answer - and my moans about the different shape of the patch for the number to the letters is wrong as there is no consistency there either.

However I do think Divpatch's are too yellow and look overly odd because of that.

Second photo also shows them stitched on with a nice simple overstitch. I think my machine will stay in it's box.

Hehe, I like the upside down number/letters configuration Pete! I wonder what the story is with that?

From comments made when I posted this and other photos of my Grandfather elsewhere I get the impression that it wasn't unknown for the numbers/letters to be reversed, however nothing was said as to why this happened.

The reason is that the patches were sent out initially without instructions. The different units around the country had to work out what to do with them and some got it wrong.

Ok, both can be used. The official ones are printed, but there were a lot of other unofficial types used, including ones in all the colours of the rainbow. It just depends on the unit.

BTW, with the printed ones from divpatch, I was wrong. Cut around the white box, then fold almost right up to the lettering and iron.

Also, the titles are supposed to go 1 inch down from the shoulder seam.

(I found my book...)

As for material used, it's suggested the lining from BD jackets is right... I might be able to get hold of some stencils to make the badges...

For Glamorganshire we need Welch Regiment cap badges. Note the spelling. It changed from Welsh to Welch in 1920/21.

Monty delivered swiftly. Bimetal cap badge looks fine to me. Both the shoulder title and the division patches are embroidered on battledress coloured reinforced-back felt.

Found I had actually already ordered these from them too while ordering something else, had to collect packet from the Post Office this morning. I like the Home Guard patch but the battalion identifiers seem to get lost on the Battledress. Got a badge on its way too off Ebay so may be a while!

I guess that would make some sort of sense but seems quite light. Then again most originals are pretty old and grubby by now.
