i'll kill a man in a fair fight or if i think he's going to start a fair fight or over a woman or.......

They're the "Rifle, .303 Pattern, 1914" otherwise known as the 'P14' or they could be 'M1917's (the US produced .300 version of the P14 - most .303 rifles were phased out of Home Guard use to be replaced with .300 calibre weaponry). This model of rifle was the 'standard' rifle issued to the Home Guard; SMLE No.1s and No.4s were destined for front-line troops.

Some Home Guard were given SMLE's prior to Dunkirk, however these were all taken back because of the shortage of weapons post Dunkirk, thus the Home Guard were issued with the P14 and more commonly the P17, No.4's only show up amongst the Home Guard very late in the war and are very rare. The norm is the P17 usually painted with a red band on the foreend to remind them that it doesn't take the .303 round.
More importantly any such shouty Sgts should be deliberately undermined by comic timing and nonplussed bemusement.

And what's this? our illustrious officer has decided to model himself - or at least his face- on that tedious mad... oh dear, I am going to have to up my Sgt Wilson-ness now... Either that or break out the 'full Milligan.'
