[Sticky] The Battle of Monte Cassino

Scenario: Fourth Battle of Monte Cassino, May 1944. Since January the Allies had been held in their advance on Rome by the extensive fortifications of the Gustav Line and three large scale attempts to breach the defensive line had bought limited gains. In early May the fourth plan of attack was put into motion which included using the newly arrived 2nd Polish Corps to outflank and isolate the dominating feature of the Gustav Line â€“ the abbey of Monte Cassino. General WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Anders, the commander of 2nd Polish Corps, readily agreed to the task assigned to his force seeing it not only as a chance to fight back at the Germans after such a long period building this force, but as a vital way of showing the world that the Free Polish were fighting hard for the allies. On the other side of this defensive line Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring believes he faces 6 allied divisions. In fact he faces 13 and the fourth, and final, battle of Monte Cassino is about to begin. Assigned to defend the bastion of Monte Cassino is the 1st FallschirmjÃ¤ger Division which has held the position tenaciously since February. Though the Gustav Line is about to be breached, and the position of Monte Cassino rendered untenable, to enable the German armies to withdraw to the next defensive line the FallschirmjÃ¤gers must hold their position until ordered to retreat. What follows is a serious of desperate and close encounters as both the Poles and Germans try to seize and hold key points behind Monte Cassino in the hope of either keeping their lines of retreat open, or of isolating and cutting off this position once and for all.

Though that game is set in the third battle of Monte Cassino, this game is the fourth battle. :wink:

those chaps represented are, one assumes, from '2nd New Zealand Corps, comprising the New Zealand 2nd Division, the Indian 4th Division and the British 78th Division'.

given the association of the Lewis gun and those down under, I would assume they are New Zealanders pictured.

Well I'm up for this. Really nice to see a Polish theme being portrayed considering they were the 4th largest allied force after USA USSR and GB & Commonwealth. Can you let me have some details of cost etc?

Also as an aside - did anyone know that Brazil had a contingent fighting of the allied side in the Italian campaign?

My dear transit camper failed its MOT so my marathon trip is now ongoing - sitting here on a Virgin train from Euston (after a train from worthing - then across Town on a 73 bus).
