For any interested parties, Hiki are now doing French uniforms:

Just the greatcoat for now, but I imagine they'll have tunics, trews, caps, puttees, etc. up soon.

It is something that's crossed my mind, but Brit kit takes priority for the time being. Maybe when I see how much they do the rest of the uniform for...

I'm determined to finish off my British impressions before I look at starting anything else but French would be quite unique.

EDIT: If anyone is up for doing a French impression I'd definitely join in. I think it'd be a really unique looking squad

Regards,

Ralph

I know that CHThree has 1940 French kit, have a look at the operation Copenhagen section in the past games area, it's a very smart looking uniform.

SOF sell the 1st world war style leather belt kit, which I believe was still in use in 1940.
You could also use your ZB-26 as a stand in for an FM 24/29.

That Zb26 is turning out to be a really flexible weapon!

Really interested in the French uniform, I'm torn between that and German Heer.

Can`t imagine there are ever going to be many events where you will get use out of French kit. Standard German Heer however

BTW, my Mle 38 uniform was from Schipperfabrik, and I am not *that* impressed with its accuracy, (pockets not sloped, pantalons"golf" not silly enough etc). I have higher hopes for Hiki. Just as well, as schipper seem to have given it up.

How were the side packs and such from Schipper? They seem to be the only place that does repros.

The Mle 38 side pack is a lovely bag, with few minor niggles: - the colour is a little orange - originals are either seem to be a light green simnilar to post war french packs or very faded looking tan; The srap is made of quite a thin webbing fabric, not so that it would break, but it folds itself over, the metal work is panited rather than japanned. I really like it though, I use mine every day (with a leather strap from a post war french bag).

The leather work is pretty sturdy , I spent a while darkening mine with various shades of polish .

BTW Hiki now has an M38 tunic on his site.

Still no collar tabs for concealing insignia though :-(

I noticed that they have a few more French bits and bobs on there yesterday, I didn't notice the lack of collar tabs though, maybe they could be added by a tailor? They also have a cap and puttees, no pantalons though (though I suspect they'll be up soon).

Would leaving the side pack to fade help the colour issue? As long as the construction is sturdy, that's the main thing really. It does look like a very nice pack though, very stylish indeed.

Well, mine has been in general use for about 2 years, has been left on a table in a sunny hallway for ages (that is where it lives when I am not using it) and shows some sign of fading when you compare the outside to the inside. You can't wash it with bleach and dye it like I once did with orange SOF webbing because of the leather, which is actually darkening very nicely with general handling. I will take a pick of it next to my original.

Oh, and I do expect panatlones very soon because he has recenlty received a parcel from me with an original pair (along with an original tunic and a schipperfabrik cap) :-)

His puttees are WW1 pattern though, still probably in use in '40 but the later mle 38 pattern were curved and had leather tabs. Again, I will take some pics of mine tomorrow, I am planning to send those to him too.

This is great news :good:

Now there seems to be an abundance of new factions that we can portray I'm feeling like we should have a Battle of the Alps game, find a site in the lake district and go nuts with french and italians :giggle:
