I'm planning to permenantly badge up my WPG BD's as South Staff's to use for re-enactment purposes therefore I want to make sure I get everthing in the right place first time, below is a picture of my replicator BD blouse badged up as Ox & Buck's my intention is to move all the badges to my WPG blouse but replacing the Ox & Bucks with a South Staffs shoulder title, my question is are the badges in the correct place?
Also I'm going to put the hessian backing on the cap badge, I think something was said about what the correct type of hessian was so I wanted to check that as well, the picture below shows what I was planning on using;
heh... that's what we've been using so far... but from what I can gather Gadge thinks its all wrong... He's yet to work out what we should actually be using!
As for the positioning... the main thing is to get the Cpl stripes in the right place, which I think is 9.5" from the shoulder seam to the tip of the point on Cpl stripes. (Its 9" for LCpl and 10.5" for Sgt)
The other insignia should then be put on with about 1/2" gap between, or as best as can be managed given the space available
As for the position of the glider qualification, I'm not sure.
I have a book with all this in... I'll try and remember to check it for you...
Thanks, what I'll do is sew on the cpl stripes at the right height and the S.Staffs shoulder titles and then position the other two so they're evenly spaced.
This hessian badge backing thing is still confusing me, despite the previous posts on it. Can someone give a step-by-step explanation; for peeple wot cant doo things gud?
Just cut a bit of hessian to the same size and shape of the knotted ropes of the badge and stick it to the back.

About half way down CHThree posted a picture of how it should look.
Whether or not it's the correct type of hessian with the weave in the correct orientation is another matter entirely lol!
OK that's easier than I thought. All my hessian is in metric weave but I guess it will have to do...
As for the position of the glider qualification, I'm not sure.

It should be on the right forearm, 6" above the lower edge of the cuff.
As for the backlng of the cap badge, my info so far suggests a disk of brown holland cloth. Though the pic I have of that has it on a collar dog, so it may be wrong.
I also want to badge up as South Staffs. Is there agreement now as to where the badges should now go or is Pete right with his pic?
erm... I thought my posts pretty much covered it?
What I've done is sew on the shoulder title then the corporal stripes as per Yith's post, (9.5" to tip of stripes), and then spaced the airborne and pegasus badges between them, I'll try and get a picture up soon.
Sorry Richard, I misread your post.
Honestly dont sweat about the hessian backing.
Gadge may defend his old regiments honours and traditions but there are wartime images of the badge being worn without any backing. If you can or have backed it good for you, if you havent, dont worry, get it done when you have time and the right cloth. You are still correct to wear it without.

Hi,
Last week I received a free sample of "Holland cloth" from Whaleys and as you can see it is quite different to the Hessian.
Hmm that doesnt look like the stuff i've seen on wartime badges,
the ones i've seen had very fine white/beige hessian type weave.
"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
It might have been bleached, this is "natural". Close up it looks a bit more like Hessian.
yeah thats pretty much spot on.
should be on a disc behind the badge.
sortof oval so the edges protude around the knott but not the crown.
"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
I don't suppose there are any photos anywhere?
I'll try and find some.
last time i saw it was at the reg museum in lichfield.
