OK

What would folk like covered.

I do have a plan but I'd rather re-cap anything folk want to do again if they feel it useful.

So far we've done

Cam and concealment
Tactical movement
Section formations
Section attack
fire control orders
Hand signals
Foot drill
Kit admin

anything i've missed, anything you want to do again?

fire and manouver and left/right flanking attacks would be good, not done that properly for years. also patroling if we have time.

What about something on sharpshooting and how we can use the rifles to best effect in games dominated by automatic weapons?

thats not going to be easy due to the nature of WW2, unfortunataley for the good guys, 90% of the time we are attacking the germans, which doesnt lend itself much to sharpshooting. we tend to be running over open ground while they sharpshoot at us from cover.

I can teach you marksmanship principles and the 'science' of shooting but I cant do much more than that given the smoothbore 'pea shooter' nature of aegs and rifles.

Nige can you remember marksmanship principles cos its going to be a pig finding my notes.

If i recall.... its loosely...

1. the weapon must point towards the target without undue stress or effort.
2. position and hold.
3. site picture
4. Follow through and trigger snatch

Obviously a lot more to it than that but its eight years since I've taught it and its sort of automatic to me these days.

You find most 'natural good shots' are folk who obey the principles of marksmanship without realizing they are doing it.l

Cool. Anything would be good. The limit of my military experience is making gold teeth and fillings for the Budeswehr.

1. the weapon must point naturally at the target without physical effort.
2. sight alignment I.E. aiming must be correct.
3. breathing.
4. the shot must be released and followed through without disturbing the position.

off the top off my head thats it i think gadge ( its been over 15 years)

a good mate of mine is a sergeant in the yorkshire regiment. he teaches sniping , i will see if he has any bumf i can have.

Agreed we need to practice attacking and flanking moves, but also falling back and counter-attacking.

I would also appreciate some time and help setting our rifles up.

However, I think instead of talking about sharpshooting remember that we're pretending to be riflemen, not snipers or marksmen.

I think our time would be better spent establishing the effective range of our "rifles" and learning how to judge distances up to about 50m or whatever. Also, we could see how much firepower we can put down with bolt-actions and try to use them for suppression, rather than thinking we're all going to be just hiding in a bush waiting for some hapless german to wander into our sights.

I totally agree B&A

At some point we'll be doing practice at putting enough fire down to allow the bren team to manouvre as was the 1940s tactic.

Then the bren puts enough fire down for the riflemen to assault the objective.

I think an hour dedicated to hop set up and ranging wouldn't be wasted at all either, especially as we can work out what we can hit on site from where!

Bang on.

Another thing - we should work on lots of shouting and pretending to be aggressive when it goes loud.

*pretending* to be agressive?

I'm shocked I thought I'd already turned you all into steely eyed warriors with 1000 yard stares :)

It looks exceedingly unlikely that I will be unable to get down for this, so will have to remain as untrained and amateurish as before :(

(Edit: that was Unable, not able. Kind of an important typo that was)

Hi All

if we are doing some skill at arms training and practice section attacks I can supply the following.
I can make up some targets using the Fig 14 Hun Head image stuck onto cardboard backing and attached to stakes. See the site below for what it looks like.

i think the image dates back to WWII and is a small enough target to be challenging at our short engagement ranges.
I know we would not deliberately aim at someones real face but my printer cannot produce large enough images of the Fig 11 Charging man. The small images produced of the figure 11 would make it seem like we were attacking an army of midgets or Barrys.

Looks unlikely that I will be able to make this, as I am running out of leave entitlement - and I work 2 weekends in 3 , might be able to swap a shift but I won't know until much closer to the time.
