Can I ask how many units will be portrayed, or rather with what frequency? I know we are free to portray as many or as few units as we like, but as someone who hasn't even got the first unit uniform yet, to see another unit listed already is a little bewildering. I just wouldn't want us to put off anyone from joining because of this.

Yeah understood.

Next event for the group is 16th Dec at F&O. That's commando really if you go as brit. So airborne denison (etc) or BDs, plus green beret. I'll sort out more details when I have a mo.

After that, who knows for sure... but it looks like there will be a PBI event which will involve airborne in March.

I posted the Hallamshires stuff as I have it all to hand and thought people might wonder what the heck it was! Not cos I expected people to rush out and get it yet!

Rich, yes totally understood - I just wouldn't want us to overwhelm potential recruits.

Yep its concentrate on the airbonre first.

The other bits are just there so if you're in a junk shop and you see something that you think looks good you dont ignore it as its not right.

It also gives the kit whores something to keep them busy while everyone goes at their own pace.

Is the only difference between the Commando getup and the Airborne getup is what colour beret you wear (and insignia)?

Pretty much

If i were going to do it on a budget

I'd buy:

battldress torusers (any pattern or material)
A battledress blouse (and badge it as commando)
a denison (with no badges)
a maroon beret with staffs badge
a green beret with commando badge
basic 37 pat webbing

with that you can do both wiht no faffing about, commando looks good in BD and airborne *has* to have the denison really.

But as you rightly point out webby you only really need to switch beret as after d-day the comandoes were issued denisons.

unless you go for the optional commando extras:

- badged up BD blouse
- leather jerkin

i've already got a reply from him, and yes he will be doing wool, he said to keep an eye on his shop.

I put this in the 'where can i get brit kit from' thread.

As we can see here theonly difference between late war airborne and commando is the headdress when in field kit.

(note the commando snipers are wearing windproof suits)

leather jerkin

How much is a reasonable price for genuine one? I've found a near-mint condition one (prob' not war issue/dated [and mabey different buttons] but looks exactly the same, serge lined!) in my local army surplus. It's priced up around the £55 mark. If anyone else is interested, it's in Troopers of Banbury, but don't all go phoning up about it as that'll ruin any chances of anyone else being able to haggle if they do want it

There are 3 types of leather jerkin that I'm aware of.

First is the real one... this is leather and is made up of separate pieces of leather stitched together and is fairly matt in appearance. This would be around £70 ish?

The second is a post war Belgian one and this is a single piece of leather and is darker than the first and usually glossier. They sometimes have large brass buttons with lions on them. These would be around £20?

The third is the very post war brit one which is actually made from vinyl rather than leather. £15?

A label inside always helps recognition of which is which...

I've got a 1941 jerkin which is almost orange in tone of leather, post war ones tend to be a more chocolate brown.

That sounds about right.

I have a Belgian one that I have replaced the buttons on with some more appropriate ones I found for sale on ebay.

So, in preparation of the training day and Varsity game, and now the BD is on the way I need to sort badging.

I think this is what I need:
For blouse:
Pegasus patches pair (SoF £10)
Airborne patches pair (SoF £6)
S Staffs shoulder patches pair (SoF £6)
Glider badge (SoF £5)
For Denison:
Woven para wings (SoF £3)

Is this OK? I know I have used SoF prices but I want to get them all from the same supplier with minimal faffing - unless there is a better/cheaper/easier supplier in which case please let me know!

No para wings... we're glider troops not para's :) Basically leave your denison completely unbadged.

Gadge would be best to check everything else.

As for supplier. Pegasus are probably the best supplier of airborne stuff there is.

Alternatively Monty's Locker does higher quality patches than SoF.

Both should be able to supply you with all you need.

Ah, thanks. Pegasus have a chronic web site and just show the printed airborne patches but of course no S.Staffs stuff.

So, I think I've found everything on Montys Locker (no blummin pics though  ):
South Stafford Shoulder Title Reproduction. Embroidered cotton on a felt background - 2 @ £3.50
Pegasus Arm Badge Reproduction. Embroidered cotton on a felt background - 2 @ £6.00
Glider Troops Arm Badge Reproduction. Embroidered cotton on a felt background - 1 @ £6.00
Airborne Shoulder Title (Straight) Reproduction. Embroidered cotton on a felt background - 2 @ £3.50

Does that sound right?

Sounds about right to me...

One way of dealing with Derek at Monty's Locker is to email him pics of what you want... :) He's a good chap and with me has usually asked for payment AFTER delivery.

BTW... You do know nobody will actually see these insignia as you'll always have a denison over them?

Because of this I actually have my BD's badged up as 2 Commando and Hallamshires...
