This was mentioned at the training day as I know people at Beltring mumbled about what was going on. Albeit it about reenactment, its quite possibly something thats tied into airsofting after all its title could how somepoeple would like to describe some of us ;) maybes worth watching ;) :?

Weekend 'Nazis'
Re-enacting battles from the Second World War is a popular summer pastime in the UK, and it's the Germans that most people want to portray, with the 'SS' who are the most popular of all. John Sweeney tours the biggest event of its type in Kent and discovers a darker side to the fun, with a convicted holocaust denier signing books, a trader selling a relic from Belsen and some Nazi enthusiasts expressing extreme racist views.

Its not tonight Dave its BH Monday ;) but yes it could be a bit tricky. Most likely summat and nothing with a bit of luck but who knows and thought you guys be best kept aware hence posting it. I know the reenacters are in discussions about it and damage limitations. Forearmed is to be forewarned and all that ;)

Shall be watchin it myself more than anything as it could be making a mockery of my mates wedding  as they chose to do it at belters and have been villified for it

However as its Mr Sweeney that did the programme I can only imagine what string of nothingness he put together :? After his huge tantrum (viewable and laughable on youtube ;) ) he is obviously trying to regain his creditbilaty within the beeb.

Anyone not aware Mr Sweeney was at Beltring and managed to get in the beer tent and its alledge he recorded conversations without people being aware and was seen recording himself in what appeared a one sided conversation. It shall be interesting viewing though for anyone with a WWII interest be it airsoft or reenacting as at the end of the day they both involve the weekend dressing up ;)

I did see a guy one year selling a concentration camp blue-and-white striped smock. Very distasteful.

Just the sort of thing TV producers lap up.

See as a collector, however not POW stuff I think it depends on the where the outfit goes and for what purpose it serves to the person collecting that type of stuff.

As vile as it maybe, in the right collection, say amongst other POW stuff at an appropriate museum that piece could really bring home the unison that was enforced on POW's. Its a powerful item hence seen as distasteful, but a real item that can explain without words the attrocities put upon those in concentration camp.

If things like that are locked away then I myself feel thats worse, we should see, we should remember and gawd forbid the day we forget.

I don't think selling it at an events the right thing to do however, its a specialised item and should have been dealt with a great deal more tact for its provinence.

Thats just my opinion on it though

Well airsoft in general unfortunately has negative thoughts from the ignorant general public. Alot of people I speak to raise an eyebrow at the use of repica guns though most accept i'm responsible.

Thing to remember with the German side of things is alot of them were conscripted including the SS in the latter part of the war, unfortunately Joe Public will need educating and he/she probably won't care much.

On a lighter note most people I know actually have better things to do then watching the "idiot box in the living room", especially not the likes of Panorama. I expect it'll be the same for many of you.

Nah I'll be home with the kids tucked in bed so I shall be watching the idiot box

Point of the matter is as it is a tv programme and that many may not watch it, the programme could cause a ripple with other forms of media that people need to be aware of ;) say this programme is seen by someone and they decide to contact an airsoft site for their opinion on it, that then could affect us all ;)

Summat an nuffin am hoping for but I will be watching it as I do go to events both airsoft and reenactment and at least if I know whats gone on it makes me more alert for anything that could occur should it ;)

Am a cynic maybes but I'd rather be aware than be oblivious

Yes, I agree. But this sort of thing shouldn't be sold for profit IMHO.

No I'll agree with you on that, but sadly its against human nature to just give things away willynilly if they are of considerable value and something like that is not a cheap item we're talking several figures as I've seen one for sale elsewhere before now. I fully appreciate and understand that to put a price on it considering as said its provinence and how little value was put into the original piece is sad :( again my opinon and if I had no money and something of value I can't comment if I'd just give it away, however the people who hold these sort of items are usually those who could afford to gift it to a collection.

Thanks for the info. Helga. I for one will definitely be watching it, or setting up the DVD recorder - as you rightly say, forewarned is forearmed, and I've a feeling someone at work is almost bound to make some clever remark or ask me if I saw it.

It always pays, I think, to make yourself aware of different opinions and perspectives on things, especially when you are involved in something a lot of people, rightly or wrongly, find at best a little odd and at worst potentially dangerous. No doubt the views expressed in Sweeney's prog will be highly unrepresentative of those held by the majority of reenactors/living historians/airsofters/militaria collectors....but it pays to be aware of, and sensitive to, what other people think. Even people who attend events like Beltring, and ought to 'know better' can be guilty of being somewhat blinkered about all this. Walking past one trader's tent in my LAH officer's uniform, having narrowly avoided running into a more senior gentleman coming out of it, I apologised and was greeted with the comment "Bleeding SS!" :D

hmmmm, gonna be a load of tossers talking shite i think,

im going to do a documentray,

the theme will be about a reporter, who will make up any old bollocks just to get something commisioned for the telly.

then again, i cant be arsed , if you dont fit the white, 2.4 kids , casual drinker, country walk, football fan, labour/lib/conserveative model, then your clased as a fringe lunatic, and fair game for SCUM reporters out to make a name.

3 times in life ive been asked for interveiws on the street by news crews, EVERY time ive said NO, as my veiws, if they bother to show them, will be edited and warped, so not a chance

one sexy woman reporter asked me to comment on the train strikes in 1999/2000 ,as i walked near a station
"will you do a interview for the BBC?" , said the sexy bird

"no thanks",me

"its for the telly" , sexy bird

"exactly, NO THANK YOU" , me

bird whispers to sound guy in amazement "he dosent want to go on telly??????"

a guy at the trafford centre, couldnt get his face out of camera crews, he pushed in every shot, every time, he was always on north west tonight,
the tit lost his other job with a local council, because he was on the sick from, whilst working in security as the trafford centre, that tossers ego cost him TWO JOBS, as the council phone the trafford centre and said does mr malik work for you?????????? (OPEN A SHIT CAN NOW)

I dunno I can think of several beeb presenters that if they had an exposee type docu on them including Mr Sweeney would no doubt be far more popular than dressing up ;) and I bet would be a darn sight more damaging to them than us ;)

You can only imagine what past times he has if he has to go to extreme measures to make other hobbies look bad .......
