(cut this out of the UCAP thread as it could have headed that thread off in the wrong direction)
I didn't get chance to talk to Shaun at SYA today, the weather was piss poor and as a result I was wet and wanted to go home. I'll probably ring him for a chat tomorrow.
The site though is good... and will be a lot better when they have access to all the buildings, which is expected in the next couple of weeks and I see no reason for it to fail to be the case. There is a LOT of woodland around the edge of the site as well. We did have problems today though with the players getting demoralised because of the incessant rain getting them wet...
I did have a chat with Matt and Ben of Stirling Airsoft who were visiting the site. Ben in particular is well into WW2 and they're also planning to run an event sometime next year. I showed them my Enfield and Sten and they were very, very impressed. I also gave Ben one of our business cards and talked to Matt for a while to explain how we work and that we'd consider assisting them if need be. They are however very experienced at running big events so I doubt whether much input will be needed.
I also had a chat with my friend Ed (Panther) and when he heard that Dave Manning had an airsoft site he was interested in popping down for a look maybe next month... I'll have to investigate dates, it'd be cool to get a few of us down there.
Okay... one more thing about proteus...
Its pretty darn clean...
There is a load of dung around, but thats from cows that are no longer there so I expect the current rain will wash some of that away. There are 3 sheep on site as well so some dung there... but not too much.
The buildings are all in good nick, but the paint is peeling in some. I got a load of paint flakes on my BD and webbing, but it has already all be been brushed off... ![]()
The windows could do with being removed from the buildings, but I don't see that happening any time soon.
Matt AKA Spud? If so, I used to shoot with him down at Eversley years ago. Switched on bloke, but has a tendency to be a bit serious about things. Don't think much of Ben, since he was CO at a Senny event I was at a few years ago (Gadge was on the other side at the same game!) where Ben's planning and leadership (or lack of it) lost us the game.

Dirt... mud: fine, paint flakes: fine...
The problem is coal dust... its nasty to wool and even gets ingrained in cotton drill. It took 3 washes to get it out last time I experienced it. SYA Loxley has one building coated in the stuff. gah!
Matt = Matt Belgrove... boss man at Stirling Airsoft. Ben is his ever present sidekick. I've known them for ages and though they do have their faults they are sound blokes.
Ah, *that* Matt, i thought u meant the other one who does a lot with Stirling.

Okay just chatted to Dave Manning (Airsoft Skirmish) about his site.
Its based on a paintball site, but doesn't use any of the areas the paintballers use except for the safezone buildings. So its free from paint! He tries when he can to book the whole of the site rather than just a bit though so that there are no paintballers on it.
He uses 80 acres normally, but there is a lot more available. The 80 acres is all old woodland with interesting terrain features and varied levels of density. There is a track system through the wood so there's access for vehicles.
He can't build any fortifications (etc) on site but does have some white camo netting in places to mark objectives. He likes this for two reasons... 1) it makes the objectives visible. 2) it was free ![]()
We can put up our signage (etc)... I assume we'll have to take it down afterwards.
He runs games on the last Sunday of each month, but is going to try and change it to the 3rd Sunday of each month. I may pop down on the next event June 24th or on the one in July if it doesn't clash with Beltring.
He won't actually be there on June 24th though.
Sounds good -I'm still keen for an August game if posible.
August for a CiA Lite game?

I liked the idea of a full ish game at Dave Mannings site. Depends how we define lite - I was assuming numbers hence UKAP being a lite ?
yes UCAP in October for a lite (ish)
August is totally booked up for me... just look at the calendar!
Okay... I just had a chat with Shaun at SYA (eznugud) about the use of Proteus.
First of all its Warlock (aka Gary Rutter, ex of the ABA) who is pushing him to run this game. He now marshals full time for SYA.
Shaun has now seen the pics and videos of Arnhem and was very impressed. I think its moved him more over to our way of thinking, though he'd still like to run and design the scenario himself. It seems that him and Gary have been discussing it at length.
As for the date, that is very much flexible, as is whether it will be a single day or weekender.
He'd really like to meet up with as many of us as he can at the site and it was suggested that a Saturday would be a good time to do this.
I suggested next Saturday (9th June) as a possible date, note I still have to check with Rachel that I'm available then.
Its hard to summarise a 10 minute chat in a single post, but I think that something could be done here... This could be less effort for us as with the Gunman game... Of course that does mean that some of the issues we have with the Gunman game may raise their heads with this one as well!
So, what do you think? Are you guys available on the 9th June? Probably mid morning?
Could well do , I've not seen the miserable old sod for a long while .
Our kit and rules , his place and scenario could be well worth supporting .
I don't think it would be prudent for me to come - the present Mrs Chomley-Warner is returning from her teaching trip **holiday** in Corsica on the 9th and I ought to be there looking pleased and welcoming.
I will of course have to trash the immaculately kept household so it looks like I couldn't cope without her - I really would like to maintain a leg-over at least once a year if I can.
I don't see another weekender being a good idea this year so perhaps a day event with punters being allowed to arrived the evening before?
It seems funny that he is keen on doing WW2 at SYA though - given the large player base he has very few have shown any interest at all in WW2 so far.
Feel fairly sure that we will be giving him a section on the events forum rather than 'in association with' ... ... anyhoo, see how far you get!

Well... Its Gary pushing for it really...
Shaun said "he's doing me 'ead in"... lol
Er, and you can blame me for talking Gary into the whole WW2 thing ![]()

Yep fine by me Rich . It's only a chat and a wander for a while, and see what he has to say . Might be nice to do it in kit just to get his juices going a bit for it ![]()
..........any excuse i know
