Bit of advice required... Bought a back pack (think it's in the style of a veschesmock) or to those not in the know a back pack that looks like a sack tied at the top! But to get back on subject, the pack has 2 buckle straps either side. What would be strapped there? I can only think a roll or blanket which would tyake the shape of a horse shoe over the top of the pack? Am I close or totally off track? Any ideas are welcomed!

I don't know what they're for, but they weren't there on wwii issue packs.

Any straps/pockets other than the long loop that fastens the top and makes the carrying straps probably want to be carefully removed to make it wwii spec.

plus the strap that attaches across the chest, that should be fastened to the loop on either side - that should be there also.
