We thought it might be fun to have some big screen entertainment as part of the Sevastopol Social.
I don't know of any WW2 movies that cover the Crimean campaign so we thought we'd ask what people would like to see.
My suggestion is Downfall, which will make sense once you see the overnight accommodation that we have.
Fortress of War might be a good option. Wrong fortress but rather fitting.
Haven't seen it.
I definitely don't want something grim like Come and See.
What because downfall is a light hearted romcom?
Ah yes, I haven't seen it yet... but, whilst there was lots of Soviet suffering depicted... let's not forget that Brest-Litovsk is in the middle of Poland, which they had invaded!
You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
And Stalingrad depicts the trials of the German invaders of Russia, whats your point? Besides the fortress was Russian built so they could claim tenancy.

Compared to Come and See - yes. Although I'd describe it as a brittle comedy of manners.
How about Das Boot. Sailors 'n' dat, innit
Fiddler on the roof is splendid. I'm glad you are not thinking of come and see - truly shocking but necessary viewing - best watched at home.
For comedy - I know it's got no soviets- how about jackboots on Whitehall?
What's the recent one about the jewish partisans?
I'm a hero with coward's legs.
Having had it put into my head now, I vote for Fiddler on the Roof. Superb!
How about the new 2011 "The Bomber"? Russian Bomber crew shot down behind german lines!
Looks pretty good

“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."
Adolf Hitler, November 1942
"Comrades, Red Army men, commanders and political workers, men and women guerrillas! It is on your perseverance, staunchness, fighting skill and readiness to discharge your duty to the country that the defeat of the German-fascist army and the liberation of the Soviet land from the Hitlerite invaders depend! We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."
Joseph Stalin, November 1942
I brought a copy of that film, it's great. It's also about 3 hours long so may be best for the Friday. I'll bring it along if you like
Ther is also that black and White Mosfilm about the young lad who becomes a partisan. Can't remember the title tho.
I'm a hero with coward's legs.
Compared to Come and See - yes.
True, but any film is light hearted compared to C&S.
I'd like to see 'The Bomber', although I may have to watch before February.
The Sound of Music?
Frankly, I'm surprised the state is even asking for suggestions. Maybe to weed out any treacherous spiders with counter-revolutionary choices?

Bozhemoi! We are all politically unreliable!

Bet he's still spending the royalty checks for "Eidelweis".
I vote for "The Producers" (the original version) Then the Germans can do a dance number to "Springtime for Hitler"
