305. Infanterie-Division
History

The 305. Infanterie-Division was formed in late 1940 in Wehrkreis V, the modern Länder of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. Its establishment took place around Ravensburg with some elements forming around Ulm, because of this the division received it’s nickname of the Bodensee Division (due to its proximity to lake Constance). The Division was to be transported to the southern sector of the eastern front for the start of the 1942 offensive. The 305. Infanterie-Division fought their way from Kharkov to Stalingrad, and it was there that they would fight their toughest battles during the brutal assaults into the Dzerhezinski Tractor Factory and Barrikady Gun Factory in northern Stalingrad. They would eventually surrender in the northern pocket in February 1943.

Order of Battle
Generalleutnant Bernhard Steinmetz

The 305th was formed during the Wehrmachts 13th wave of mobilization in November 1940 and its original roll was that of a Garrison Division. Is consisted of the following regiments;

Infanterie-Regiment 576
Infanterie-Regiment 577
Infanterie-Regiment 578
Artillerie-Regiment 305

It wasn't until February 1942 that the 305th was converted to a field division and in March it was finally equipped as an infantry division. When the 305th was sent to southern Russian and the plan was for it to serve as a garrison Stalingrad after the fall of the city.

I think square helmets came in after 1945 Marsha, so all round helmets might be best bet.

Heh, I always thought of them as more of an Oval shape!

But for the serious answer, Yes Marsha, we really want to get every soldat playing in a Stahlhelm as this event is about front line combat units launching an attack as part of the major german offensive to crush the remaining pockets of Bolshevik defenders in the city! Helmets would have been compulsory and it's a good idea from a H&S point of view anyway.

A-frames etc are purely optional so noone should feel that they MUST have one but they do look great! :good:

The assault will be spearheaded by the Sturmpioniere of Panzerpionier-Bataillon 50. and there will be losts of specialist roles available for Pioneers and Infantry alike. MG teams, Mortar crew, Signallers, demolitions teams etc. will be required for both sides.

For any wishing to portray the pioneers, (And we are hoping there will be lots of you ) it's simply a change of shoulderboard piping colour from white to black. easily done in 5mins with a permanent marker! Simples! Oh, and we will have a good few sets to loan out for those who dont want to change their own permanently. :good:

“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."
Adolf Hitler, November 1942

"Comrades, Red Army men, commanders and political workers, men and women guerrillas! It is on your perseverance, staunchness, fighting skill and readiness to discharge your duty to the country that the defeat of the German-fascist army and the liberation of the Soviet land from the Hitlerite invaders depend! We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."
Joseph Stalin, November 1942

I have just realised that the reformed 305th Division also took part in the fighting at the Volturno Line.
So a unit HQ sign can be used twice :good:

Now where did I leave the paint?
