So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."

Ah! Fair enough mate :) I dont actually need anything myself but was just curious as to how available and costly the strichtarn stuff was these days. I was really suprised that I could hardly find any uniform items in any of the usual UK and German surplus shops on the web. The few items of feild gear that are around still seem to be reasonably priced though.

Incidently, This US based site is a great source of info on all things DDR NVA: :D

I have scraped together a US '87 impression together using photos as sames from Panama and Grenada. As Gadge Said, the US were just beginning to be issued with the personal protection armour, such as the interceptor armour and pasgt helmet. Over the top of this an ALICE webbing set, usually comprising of a mixture of cotton ALICE from the late NAM Era to the nylon stuff that was more comon in the 90's (black hawk down for example) The rest of the infantry who did not have the armour etc, would have had a mix of Woodland Camo and Late Vietnam Alice Webbing, and an M1 helmet with a Woodland Camo cover.

I'll put some photos up at the end of the weekend when I have come back from a full weekend of airsoft!!

Gadge are we gonna allow any sort of modern spec armalites/AKs, but without the RIS attachements?

If anybody who hasn't already, the golden oldie PC game "Operation Flashpoint" has been at the pinnacle of the inspiration of this game! :)

I have an ex-SAS chap who works with us, he's gonna see whether he can dig out some photos of when he was posted in Berlin in 86ish I think.

Sounds interesting, I'd have to go British for this especially as Star are now doing a SLR, 8) what sort of camo/webbing/helmet would have been worn by the Brits at this time?

Well for the german flecktarn wasnt on issue until about 1990 so it should be moleskins greys.

UK forces were wearing 58 webbing and 80s pattern 3/4 lined dpm, para smock and sas smocks.

I think allowing m4s is ok but no ris stuff and very few optical sites.

Think cis wwii rules in feel really.

As a rule no post 1990 kit (apart from silly things like boots) is a fair rule of thumb i reckon.

Yeah but the point was Josh that your cold war game isnt really that cold war being flecky vs dpm, looking to do something a bit tighter themed but dont worry it wont be at the same time.

I want to do something that *looks* like 1987 if you get me not just the scenario.

lol, I thought the idea was impressions if you don’t have the exact kit, NOT go out and spend a fortune on new stuff! Or you can’t play!! Or has that changed? The Cold War games we run have as much attention to detail as the 2ww games we run, but as there were no real conflicts the public ever got to know about that leave alot of walking around a wood and pointing at each other at far far away as a senario! Or are you 007ing it, hehe...ide pay £500 to be a 00, play some cards...the women  and then shoot some badies at the end :D Oh man...the gadgets!

If running a Cold War weekend in a purpose built Cold War training area isn't Cold War enough I give up!

Think the idea is to get it as realistic as possible,... allowing enough time for people to assemble the gear without it costing an absolute fortune. I have just put an exact US impression together based on photos for about £70.

This idea isn't based on re-enacting a battle from the cold war, as there weren't many/any.... it's really a "what if" scenario, 'what if' NATO and the Soviets fought tooth and Nail for years, contesting over the eastern European countries.

A good computer game called 'World in Conflict' is a strategy game based on this, involving NATO and the Russians Fighting in Norway, France and Germany. A similar emotion felt these days where soldiers went off to fight, but not in Iraq or Afgan, but over to Germany, where the war has been raging for years.

I think your confusing this with a cia wwii game Josh.

CiA counts as is about impressions.

This is a 'Webby , Major & Gadge Production' lol.

This is neither a CiA or PBI game mate its a personal project of a few of us who want a pretty ultra realistic 'fulder gap' styled game.

Not trying to cause any offense and sorry if you took it that way, but dpm vs flecktarn doenst feel remotely cold war to me regardless of how good the area or scenario is, unless you cap kit at 1991 (when the soviet union effectively imploded) its pretty easily going to be full of ris and camelbacks.

Again looking at dong a non profit, high detail, immersive event here for small numbers , not a big game for hundreds of players.

If i can get 10 US and 10 UK players vs 10 soviet and 10 east German i'd be happy.

I've got UK re-enactment group who specialise in British 1980s infantry very interested and I'l be looking on the soviet forums for the Opfor

Completely different market i think so no need for either of us to worry.

Again looking at doing this October at the earliest to be honest.

I'm aiming for the operation flashpoint fans really.

Well other than that little affair in Korea... and some minor east west tension in Vietnam & Malaya

:)
