I have just been informed, on another forum, that this is in fact a springfield 1903 bayonet, WWII vintage.

Nah,its a Garand bayonet. The M1903 bayonets are longer and sometimes cut down/modified to be used with the Garands but they are easy to spot as the blood grooves run all the length of the blade.

Yep M1 bayonet, geezer on the other forum doesn't know what he's talking about. If it were a cut down M1903 the fuller depression would run the full length of the blade.

What the other chap said:

"This Bayonet is a war time production M1905 Bayonet. When the Springfield 1903 rifle was replaced by the M1 Garand in 1936/37 as the standard issue rifle, the original M1905 bayonets fitted the 1903 rifle, but not the M1. This bayonet is a later version which fitted both rifles."

I don't mind either way :D

He's talking out of his botty. The M1905 bayonet does fit the M1, the M1905 E1 is the shortened version. Yours beyond a shadow of a doubt is a "Bayonet M1" introduced in March 1943.
