This pic was posted on this very forum a just short while ago. It was something to do with the paratroopers pinching French local's floral skirts to make fashionable helmet covers. I think.
* edit - Wladek beat me to it *

after seeing said pic a while ago, i tried it, hated it, it looked daft as we say in yorkshire. it looked very USMCy,,,, nets and scrim look better IMO.
Camo Scarf? Hehe its the section they usually cut off from the parachute tied around their neck!
I found that the camoflage was actually far too bright on mine, and it gave me away more than hiding my outline, but I think the modern repros haven't got the colour right, and may have been much darker back then.
I would suggest against doing this as an impression, as it would have been a minority who would have done it around the D-Day landings, much the same reason why they prolly took the USMC style HBT cammo off the Armoured troops.

Would imagine its a couple of Infantry guys up from Utah releaving the paras.

the top scarfe is the very yellow/gold SOF repro.the bottom one is a 1948 dated us parachute section i managed to get hold of .( plus sock)
yeah the bottom 1 is much better, even with sock! But you wouldnt wanna go cutting that 1 up to stick on your helmet!

I've seen a pic of a Fallschirmjager doing this as well, with a US Parachute piece not German. I guess he just copied these guys as I've tried to find a picture of FJs doing it with German material but with no luck. I thought it might be a cheap way to change the camo on my helmet with needing a new cover but it seems they didn't do it. ![]()

Oops, sorry I thought it was a scarf.
And according to stamper's very knowledgeable friend they are talking to the 90th infantry division, probably officers.
The chap who's looking at the camera has HBTs on, you can see the bellowed cargo pocket behind his .45
