Hi all I apologise if this has been discussed before
I have two questions
Was it very uncommon for US infantry to wear leggings with the m43 trousers?
And did they have access to (use) musette bags?

Thanks in advance
Cad

I don't think they'd wear leggings with M43 trousers as they'd almost certainly have buckle boots. I don't recall seeing a photo of it.

Musette packs would be for Airborne, Officers and maybe some specialist NCOs only, to my knowledge.

Thanks for reply Yith
I have an m43 outfit and was looking at a cheaper alternative to buckle boots ( I.e. Leggings with cheaper desert boots or a pair of my modern ones)
I just have to save up ( or hide credit card bill from miss us again! Lol)

Well I did hear that M43 trousers were quite rarely worn anyway... mustards and leggings with M43 jacket is quite common.

Quite unusual to see them in NW Europe but more common in Italy for some reason.

M43's are not common in europe. Very few were issued. Most pics will show troops with mustards. Leggings were universallly detested and buckle boots used at the first opportunity. Only patton insisted on them and that was only until buckle's became the norm. But remember it's acceptable to use what you have. Mustards are expensive. Hbt's and leggins are a cheaper option. But ifyou are going for a period look. Late war 1944/45 then its m43 jacket, mustard trousers, buckle boots and m1 helmet. No net. Hopefully this helps.

Thanks very much for all the replies,

I have an M43 Jacket and M1 helmet at present, pistol belt, suspenders and .45 holster with mag pouch and first aid pouch

your right Mustards are expensive as are buckle boots,
I have been onto Platoon in Bury and they are quoting £50 for mustards or £35 for M43 trousers.
Epic and SOF are quoting about £80 for buckle boots so although the mustards might be the "correct" look financially it might have to be M43 and buckle boots unless, I get the tax rebate thats in the news at the moment lol, as I still need a Thompson Mag Bag and a water bottle to finish the look

cheers all
Cad
p.s. I an trying for a 35th Division look, not sure whose army they were with or how quickly they got new kit ect.

I'd have thought that mustards and leggings would be the sensible option. Especially if the difference between mustards and m43 trousers is just £15. Mustards would give you more options in the long run as well as an M41 jacket isn't hugely expensive. Then you'd be sorted out for early war as well!

You can get away with almost any boot under leggings as hardly any of it is visible.

Ooo, most of it's time with Third Army, commanded by - wait for it... General George S. 'C. B.' Patton himself. :giggle: :happyclap:

So non of that sloppiness for you, ties and propper leggings all the way.

Edit: Though in seriousness I would pretty much agree with what Yith has said, M37 (Mustards) will give you so many more options in the short term, let alone the long terms.

Luck? A man needs no look when he has pressed wool trousers and a tie in battle, for then he is a real man. :D

Why did they stop wearing the helmet nets in latter war
I thought they stopped the helmet shining when wet?

Well i think it was more a personal choice..i dont remember seeing anything about them being remove from service use. Probably just that supplies dried upor that they ended up not essential pieces of kit.

They were mainly used to attach follage to the helmet to break up the dome shape.
