I'm going to bite the bullet and order some genuine Corcorans from Cost a Fortune (unless anyone can recommend somewhere better). I'm not a fan of ordering footwear online, as you obviously can't try before buying them! Can anyone advise me what the fit is like - I take an 8 in a shoe, but normally go up to a 9 for a boot, are the sizes etc. similar to other boots?

Cheers,

Mine are 11s and so am I and they fit fine.

I'd recommend you try every other website in the world before going there.

So do I need to go a size bigger than my shoe size?

I take an 11 and I got a size 11. Get what ever you normally get, they're not snow boots or rollerblades, just get the size you normally take.
There are lots of places to get them from, I'd consider having a shop around before going to SOF.
Admittedly I did get my repros from SOF but that's another option because I've had no problem with them they just need a bit more polish.

www.atthefront.com, although shipping might be a little costly.

Alternatively, if you're anywhere near Malvern on November 16th: www.militaryconvention.co.uk

Many of the US reenactors say ATF boots are excellent quality, and they don't have the awful sprayed on finish that the modern "genuine" branded Corcoran's have.

I suppose it boils down to how thick your wallet is and how much of a stitch counter you are.

As 100% accurate copies i guess branded Corcorans arent spot compared to ATF boots but to me you buy them to wear not to bloody admire and point out to other lesser mortals that your boots are better than theirs

Entirely up to choice etc but in my opinion if you do buy a pair of branded Corcs then you will have a pair of boots that will serve you well for a very long time :good:

As far as i know SOF are the only UK suppliers of the branded Corcs-many other places do the cheaper version.

If ATF stuff is so great why o why cant they sort out a UK supplier so we can all sample their stuff without the fear of the dreaded customs and other fees

I second that, mine have taken some serious punishment in some hostile environments (EG Seriously wet CiA game in North Wales, the mud at "In The Pocket") and are still going strong.

I was going to suggest that if you know what size you actually want to order there are places in the US which will ship genuine corcorans to the UK, it worked out cheaper when I did it, but I just checked and at the current exchange rate mean the boots are about £95.00 plus P&P + potential taxes so forget that.

I know a lot of people hate SOF but unfortunately if you want the branded Corcs they you will have to bite the bullet

Size wise when im a Uk size 8 and when i bought my new ones many moons ago they were marked as an 8 and fitted ok.

Also got a pair of ex BOB ones which i bought for my collection as they were apparently a US8 which would make them a UK7 but they fit a treat which was a bonus :good: :good:

They will leak, they aren't waterproof, but they'll stay in good condition.

They're just sewn leather, like any non-membrane (ie Gore-tex) boots they'll eventually let water in, plus the water that gets in through the top.

Waxing them will help, but the seams aren't taped so will let in water. This is why several pairs of socks in plastic bag in your musette will pay dividends.

That's not bothered me too much so far... :)

Another option would be to not wear socks at all... that's what at least one of the Chindits did (he mentions it in his book)... can you imagine walking hundreds of miles in ammo boots without socks or cushioned inners!

He didn't go into details like that.

Just said that he and some of his friends managed to train themselves not to need them... This was done before and during the jungle training he did and he said it was great not having to worry about wet socks all the time like everyone else!

BTW... he was a member of the column that walked into Burma rather than flying in... ffs...
