Ok I know that there wasn't a particular standard pattern or anything but I was wondering what everyone here did with helmet scrim?
Did you use a picture for guidance or copy a real helmet?
Anyone got any pics of their scrimmed M1?
i used the helmet on one of those 1/6th models on ebay TBH...... it looked good.
I think that less is more when it comes to scrim. My first few efforts ended up looking like I'd carpeted the whole helmet
Also, getting the scrim nice and mucky before you attach it helps.
I just cut some into strips, wire brushed to break it up a bit, shoved in. Job done.
Thanks for the help, I think I've got it down now. The photos are brilliant reference material.
Just be aware that it's not a particularly authentic thing to do, but is bloody useful in the field.
Its authentic for a D-day impression, though.
Not neccessarily a widely done thing though Matt, prolly the brighter bunch who did it.
The idea is NOT to make a pattern at all, your eye is drawn to patterns. All you need to do is break up the outline of the helmet, you don't need a lot to do that.

my gawd you must have a small head
After losing some of mine either on the way in the Jeep to Gulch or during the weekend, I'm now going to grease mine so they stick down to the helmet.

hehe or tie it to the net!
Yes, the ones I have are tied and oiled. Takes some of the sheen of it, it does have a rather interesting smell though.
What do you think about this?
A Good start, best thing to do is to hold it up in the light so that it casts a shadow on the ground. If you can still clearly make out the outline of the helmet, thats what people will see too. If its blurred around the edges its fine.
You can put too much on as well though, I think double the amount you have, but dont weave it flat against the helmet, keep loops sticking out etc
Over at Belgium there will be soon the first ever WW2-only skirm so I found it time I would make my helmet more D-Day like.
It took pretty long to make it look like this but I do like the result very much.
