hey guys, i have two sets of 3mag thompson holders and was wondering if there is any reason why i couldn't wear them not on the belt but on the suspenders, have got the idea from a game which are rarely 100% accurate.
cheers =]
They won't really sit properly and it'll be a pain in the ass to get mags out, but you could give it a try.
In the game.. are they actually the 5 cell pouches, mounted horizontally opposite each other?
In which case that is a special way of doing for pathfinders (or summat, I forget exactly) and from what I remember hearing was a right pain in the neck when people on here have tried it.
Think it was the five each side opposite each other one. Haven't had a chance to get out and use it yet in a place yet, finally got my tm thompson up and working again, keep getting problems with it for whatever reason. cheers for the help, didn't want it to be completely wrong if i ended up using them strapped horizontaly
brothers in arms hells highway you have much to answer for.
pathfinder units of the 82nd did use modified thompson pouches on the suspenders. a thompson mag bag is a much easier method of carrying thomo mags. but as the boys say if you like it do it. the problem is they will slip doen and end up on you belt unless you modify them.
I used to wear 2 5-cell thompson pouches on my chest, much like how Corrian does on Brothers in Arms (as Pat says) hehe
It's not that much of a pain in the arse, the curvature of your chest allows the mags to be withdrawn from the pouch with little restriction.
Pat's right though, regardless of whether it's "correct to do so" or not, wear what you have, and what is useful to you. All of the carrying systems have their good points and bad points.
Rigger pouches
Good - Good for carrying other things as well as magazines
Bad - limited in size, and repros are often of poor quality
3-cell thompson pouch
Good - Fit the long Thompson mags and are easy access
Bad - They werent used for Thompsons, theyre actually for the Grease gun but who cares!
5-cell thompson pouch
Good - Fit 5-mags in
Bad - Only fit the short mags in properly, they do fit the long ones but you run the risk of them dropping out.
Mag bag
Good - Holds 6 mags and is independant of your webbing
Bad - Flaps around when you run, 6 full mags can be quite heavy!
mk1 jacket pocket
Good - Free issue with Jacket
Bad - Risk of stuff falling out.

How many mags do you have ? You could get one 5 cell pouch and wear it on your belt, then buy a thompson magazine bag or a GP ammo bag and fill that up with the other mags. That would look more accurate, mate....possibly even 100%
Do you have a mussete pack or Doughboy pack ? Either way, wear the five cell pouch either directly underneath your pack or just to the left or right hand side. Wearing 5 cells on your suspenders was only done by Pathfinders.......*stitch-counting over*
Euan
Yeah usually exclusive to the pathfinders, rarely done outside if at all. Wear it however you want, I wore them on the suspenders for ease of reloading. Usual place for the 5-cell is on either Kidney as Euan says, but difficult to reach sometimes
I have seen many period photos of many different people even out side of the airborne wearing the 5 cell thompson pouch on the suspenders as it was a common practice
Care to share your sources for these many period photos?
I've never seen any other than Pathfinders.
Always willing to find new sources.

to be honest i thought it was more of an "airborne" thing. Which originated from them wanting to carry more ammo in an easier fashion. As it used to give them an extra 200 rounds. I asked this question a while ago on another thread to which no one could really come up with the answer. The best bet is to look through some period photos i guess.
It is an airborne, more specifically a pathfinder thing.
There are very few pictures of it being done and none I have every seen of it outside the airborne.
I'd need a good bit more evidence than a story of disappearing books to convince me otherwise.
Nothing to stop you doing it for a game but it's not historically correct outside the pathfinder force of the US airborne.
