Hey guys, Im putting my ranger impression together. Im leaning towards getting an assault vest instead of the haversack. I was wondering if someone that has one could tell me how they get along with it, how does it fair in game, does it restrict movement?

Im not going for the SOF one. Im buying it from ATF.

Never seen anyone with one, the real ones used at D-Day proved to be very quote ATF "They proved hot, heavy and impractical and it appears that most had been discarded ("lost") within a month of the landings"

I use one for my ranger load out, they are pretty useless as an ammo vest ( I tend to fill it full of pyro)
Hope that helps

Yeah i know they were mainly discarded. But i just prefer the look, than the haversack. Its something different. The pockets dont look that big, but i could fit my Garand mags in them.

The ATF ones look very nice but are pricey now with the pound worth s%%t PLUS the added danger of getting stung with various extras customs etc.

Has anyone ever tried dyeing an SOF 1st run one?

You could dye them OD7 but im guessing youd have to bleech to get a lighter more khaki tone.

If you are a fan of orange assult vests then get the cheap sof one,

dying would probably be too problematic though.

They were only intended for use in the landings, to bring the most amount of gear ashore with the 1st few waves to support the troops that had already landed. They're not just exclusive to the Rangers, infact you see more of the 29th wearing them on Omaha than the Rangers. Still.... a nice piece of kit, I think you could be rest assured the Repro wouldnt be as cumbersome as the originals, good for carrying your M1 Clips Matt, those pouches are like large rigger pouches.

Historical accuracy of wearing 1 as a Ranger, not spot on by any stretch, however ... practicality in wearing in an airsoft game (which is probably more to the point), you'd prolly find it better than wearing the conventional webbing.

I think it would only be thompson mags that would struggle fitting in the pouches if anybody else was thinking about getting one, but then you can easily use a mag bag.

Next time I am up at platoon I can measure the sizes of the pockets on the one they have on display.

Option1 : Pistol belt with 5 or 3 cell thompson pouches on.
Option2 : Thompson mag bag.

The infantry assualt vest didnt have the capacity to hold many magazines if any at all, was designed for carrying things like M1 grand clips, grenades, TNT that sorta thing. A submachine gunner would still have the ammo pouches on a belt/bag/ammo bag seperate to the vest.

That pic looks like its in North Africa / Sicily by the way he's using a '28 thompson, so pre-dates the normandy assualt vest. You can see the 5-cell 20 round mag pouch on his hip.
