Webbing should be tan or 'transitional'. Thats tan with green edging usually.
No 3 mag pouches in Normandy they only had the short 20 round mags, you want a GP bag, Thompson mag bag, rigger pouch or 5 mag pouch.
First aid kit, canteen and cover, e-tool was for the 101st most often the folding type.
You want an M42 jump suit, they were usually reinforced.
You want a helmet, M2 or M1C, boots are the famous 'Corcoran' jump boots though many companies made them.
Wool shirt is a nice touch, you dont need the dayglo yellow gloves or the 'drop rope'. They were usually dumped post drop.

Surely poacher you mean they didnt have the 3-cell pouches, they definately had the 30 round thompson managazines? But they usually went in the mag bag.

And before anyone jumps down my neck, I know they're pathfinders and not regular airborne!

You did well to find that Photo, the 30 round mag is rare in Normandy, mag bag or not.

That photo's in "Rendezvous with Destiny", after a quick flick through, it's the only one in the Normandy section that I can see a mag', the rest are either safely stowed, or can't be clearly seen.

Oh there are plenty more! ;)

Pic of an 82nd before Operation Huskey with a 30 round mag

Image from aftermath from Omaha Beach

101st in Normandy, Thompson mag bag far right

Questionable this one:

Guy on the left hand side, looks like he's putting a mag in the gun, hand a lot further down than you'd expect for a short mag. Sainte Mere Eglise

Easy Co in Saint Marie Du Monte

So back on topic. Tan webbing. I would go for this as the basic:

Pistol belt, water bottle, Thompson mag bag....

then if you have the money/inclination to do so, I would procure the next list as in order of importance:

Airborne Suspenders
Carlisle 1st aid tin pouch
Holster (if you have a pistol)
Dual Colt .45 ammo pouch (if you have a pistol)
Felt shoulder pads (not massively important but they look nice)
Airborne 1st aid pouch

Anything more than that is spending money for the sake of it imho, you can quite literally overdo it with airborne impressions.

but with the riggers pouch and 5 mag pouch which was more commonly worn?

I think every person was issued at least 5-cell pouch with 5x 20 round magazines. Usually worn on the left kidney. Rigger pouches would have been for things like TNT, Grenades and the likes. Personally I would go for the 5-cell pouch only if you have the short airsoft magazines. You can fit the long mags in them, but they stick out of the top. If you're using the long magazines, I would recommend a Thompson mag bag, and then a couple of small/medium rigger pouches for chucking pyro/loose bbs in bags in them.

also with the hessian strips is there a specific way of weaven them on to helmet?

No specific way, the idea is to break up the outline of the helmet. Traditionally it is done with hessian coloured green and brown... I found tearing up a sandbag and spray painting the strips with paint worked well. Essentially, you need to make the un-natural bowl shape of your lid, look like a very 'natural' shape, so that they eye is not drawn to it.

That's Sandy and I, our 2 approaches to scrimming helmets up, I went for the non-painted strips, Sandy has coloured strips

Totally agree with all the advice you've been given here, but would say for your best bet regarding the storage of 30rd mags is a gp ammo bag. More common than thompson bags, and you can get more in 'em. Go for a nice transitional one ;)

here's a pic of my 101st helmet, just used an old piece of hessian sheet cut into strips, left some natural colour and used brown kids scuff shoe liquid on the others :good:
