I'm pretty sure that the first aid dressing attached to helmet thing has been talked about before and the conclusion was it's a bit of a myth started by maybe one or two photos, i.e. put it in your pocket instead.

Also, have never seen anyone with arm ties, the leg ties are irritating enough and completely devoid of any useful purpose. Webby had a good tip with the leg ties though - thread them through the thigh pocket flap and button it down - that way they'll be held in place and be slightly less annoying.

Found it - check out Page 1 - 2 of the Kit Pic Thread.

Headshot (who knows a lot more about this than me) said this about Who'sWill's helmet attached first aid dressing -

"Oh, and tuck you chin cup in when you're in the field, it'll piss you off after about 5 minutes otherwise, and lose the first aid pack off the helmet, it's a real film thing and was rarely done during the war and also destroys the point of the helmet camo!"

Edited to give correct page numbers.

Indeed, it looks rubbish on the helmet and will just piss you off when it gets caught on twigs and branches.

Tie it to your webbing.

I think it was generally done in Op. Market Garden, rarely see any paras with them on the helmets in Normandy, its usually tied to the D-hoop on your left suspender. Another method of having it on the helmet is to have it actually under the helmet net,... but getting the net to stretch over it is a ball ache!

Sometimes they were tied to the steering column of a Jeep for easy access....Germans didn't dare touch those jeeps, thinking they were booby-trapped. ;)
