you have to commend them for being the 1st to attempt to create a Tiger from a T54(??)

T34

note christie type suspension rather than the tigers trademark interleaved road wheels (cos of the excess weight), other give away is the turret is too far forwards. A tigers turret is basically smack bang in the middle (like a t54s :) ) but the t34 has it about 2/3rds forwards.

trackspotting over...

Same ones in SPR as well, one of the films, cant recall which one has some utter bobbins where an SMG is sprayed into the drivers vision slit... nice idea if the real ones didn't have two inchs of bullet proof glass in them...

Working German armour is near impossible to get, most 251 are czech 810 tatras with the roof cut off, the StuG III in SPR is an FV432 with a body kit and even the 222 car in allo allo was a landrover with a dress on.

I'm pretty sure the Marder in SPR is a lash up too, the 20mm flak & kettenkrad are pukka though.

But yes you're right much better than a patton in grey with a balken kreuz on the side :)

Its not much better with allied armour, even in A Bridge Too Far (still probably the finest war movie ever IMO) there were not enough running Shermans so plastic models on wheels are used!

The vision slit SMG thing is SPR after they disable the first Tiger. :slap:

You're right Taff, the Kelly's heroes crew does deserve some credit for attempting to make things more authentic, especially since most films of the time were just using Pattons with crosses on. :ghey:

Does anyone know if the Jagdpanther from BoB is real? It looks like it is to me.
I can't personally see why the bigger budget films can't make their own replica vehicles. I doubt it would work out much more expensive than butchering a different vehicle to get a look a like. Its not like they have to be meet the same specs like being properly armoured or have accurate interiors most of the time.

Pretty sure its not.

There's only one running panther hull that i know off and its currently having its turret restored.

Get me a good scan of the BoB one and I can probably tell you what its built on, if i cant then porta will be able to - those AFV recce lessons only seemed a waste of time at the time...

SMG through the drivers slit is definately in SPR.

They disable it with 2 sticky bombs on the tracks which renders it immobile, however the turret continues to traverse left. Tom Hanks yells something like 'he's still in the spike' possibly? Then Tom Hanks and a load of Airborne guys run up to it. Tom sticks his Thompson in the hole and lets off about 10-12 rounds.
Following this the German comes out of the turret coughing and they blow his head off and throw 2 -3 grenades in...

Yeah thats the bit, its bollocks...

The vision slits had incredibly thick bullet proof glass in all of them. If it breaks you drop a lever the old one drops out and you slot a new one in, takes about 1 second...

about half way down the page pic of crew station with said block and clips that hold it in place.

The Jagdpanther in BOB appears to have the correct running gear which is usally the tell-tale sign. Well at least it does in the image in my head- perhaps my imagination is giving the film too much credit. You don't see too much of it which made me wonder if it could have been real- ie they could blow it up like the Fv/stug. I can't find a pic of it to find out for myself either.

Edit- found a pic. Nope not real. :D Looks like its based on a T55 but the wheels have been changed to ones that look like the correct panther ones to fool you.

Yeah for SPR and BOB they converted alot of Soviet T-34 tanks and modern british APC's, into the various tanks used in filming.

Its a bloody good job they've done on the jagd...

The stugs a bit good anyway but the jagdpanthers are incredibly well done.

Its only the road wheels that give it away from a casual look and i reckon you're right its a T54/55 given the five road wheels small drive sprocket and prominent gap after the first road wheel.

Not a lot of modern armour has a similar interleave like the panther and tiger had.

Oh to add to the SPR is bobbins bit, apparently there were *no* tigers anywhere near the American sector at that point. The Brits were facing them all (and the majority of the SS).

This is also mentioned in the special features. I'm pretty sure they made every effort humanly possible to make it look as authentic and accurate as possible, short of using the actual things ofcourse...

But how about the Shermans? They look real?

But how about the Shermans? They look real?

Highly likely, 50,000 of the buggers were built and were still in service in some armies in the 1980s (israel for one).

While working running examples not owned by arab states or third world countries are rare (previous example of plastic shells being used for a bridge too far) there are still a fair few runners available for films to hire and for private collections.

*Most* of the US and UK got shot to shit as range targets as soon as a decent tank like centurion was available to us.

The only good thing about Sherman was that it was bloody cheap so you could swamp the much better German armour with numbers. Send in five or six and one of them is bound to be able to get a flank shot of or rear shot before all six brew up.

Unless it's a Sherman Firefly which is probably the only really effective model made.. three guesses who had those and all :)
