Yes, lots of truth.
Not every soldier in an army was issued or authorised to carry a pistol.
Officers were, some of those using crew served weapons and some vehicle crew members were. GI Joe, the grunt at the front was not.
That does not mean he didn't try to get his mitts on one. Captured German pistols were popular as they were 'worth a good drop'. Useful and valuable.
Were they worn on the belt, not very often from what I can see. In combat there was a good degree of leeway allowed but even the US Army in WW2 had regulations they stuck to. Enlisted men sporting unauthorised pistols away from the front would be frowned upon.
Thats a bit of the history, for Airsoft there are no such regulations.
It all depends if you want to be accurate in your load out.
