Ok, as I now tend to spend quite a bit of time lying down prone behind an MG I would like find a cure for the continuing problem of my helmet riding down so far over my eyes that goes beyond awkward and enters the realm of useless.
We all know that anyone shooting a gun in US kit without a helmet just looks silly, and I end up having to do this so I can see, and this must stop.
So, was there a known problem during the war with M1 helmets doing this? And more importantly, how did they get around it and stop it happening?
My own looking has turned up nowt, so I turn to you all for help in this, my hour of need.
I think you need a smaller nape strap to pull it tighter under the back of the head?

I sometimes have similar issues with my German helmets. Thoses I just hook the lip of the helmet under my collar but I can't see that working with an M1 . Maybe the brim of a jeep cap might help keep it up, a common trick with modern Russian troops. You might get a bit warm in summer though.
Is it the WW2 liner setup or one of the later versions from Nam etc?
There is a nice thread on here with pictures of all the versions if someone can link it in.
I find the WW2 version better than the Nam versions.
Free speech is expensive these days!
I found that taking the Leather band out of the inside of the helmet and wearing a Jeep cap helped, the peak of the jeep cap keeps the front of the helmet out of your eyeline.
I've spent a bit of time probing for 'mines' with a fighting knife, which involved spending alot of time on my belly, encountering the same problem you're experiencing. No vision due to your M1 helmet slipping forward (or falling off
)
All I can suggest is 'ganster style' - get 'street' and turn the thing around, peek to the rear.
THAT was exactly what my plan is

You'll have to paint over the NCO stripe on your lid craig, that big assed white bar in the middle of your forr'ed would be a dead giveaway

That's Dean who has that - only for important NCOs...
p.s. it was Bloody useful at Anzio that!
Be a pro and wear it backwards. Photographers did the same (and I still do on building sites when wearing a hard hat!)
20 Gold Star Points to that man!
I did it with the Ruskie Helemt at Sev', and it worked with that as well.
Nice photo CW!
Of course the backwards helmets, but also:
Binos on belt of the first chap.
Very short/bloused leggings on the standing chap...
and can you see the hobnails!
When/where was this taken?
I can't claim credit for the photo research, it was posted elsewhere in a non-public forum section so have reposted.

Polish did it too apparently - 1939 Polish Anti Aircraft Crews always wore their helmets "backwards" even on formal parade

Yeah, I have been referring to it as 'the Polish Method' for the last month - so double win!

They appear to be wearing M40 Jackets too (no epaulettes)

This is possible with normal length leggings, the bottom of the trousers gets tucked into the very top of the leggings. I've done this before and its very uncomfortable! hehe
