Ah so thats quite small then. Cheers for those links. Hmm. May just take a stab at it. Its not as if Im a stitch counter or anything.. but there is that certain sense of personal pride.

Ooo good guide CHThree. Nicely spotted. Ive done the first PVA and cork layer (last night). Theres a LOT of cork on there at the mo BUT I've not tried to rub off the excess yet so I suspect a lot will come off then.

I was planning to bung some watered down PVA over it and then spray paint after thats dried.

Nice idea about the sand Bollogs (didnt know GW had sand-in-a-can) but its the sand look Im trying to get away from :)

FYI Diggs:

My M1 helmet after 'treatment'

And after 2 years heavy wear. Note all 'bits' have got rubbed & scrapped off revealing base coat - I'm not fussed, much prefer beat up kit! But just shows my home-made finish doesn't have any strength.

By comparison, my RAC helmet has an iron-hard textured finish that compares well with an industrial sander plate!

Having done the "glue the cork then spray " method I think next time I would do the "combo paint and cork method" next time . THis is mostly due to it helping cork disribution and the cork should absorb more paint that way making scuffs less noticable.

If you're using a brush don't streak the paint.
Just dab the tip of the brush on the surface of the helmet.

well this gets harder and harder. Rang around my local model shops and then some not so local ones. None have any ground cork or scatter made from it, and I dont trust my blender as its pretty old and knackered. Plus only one has the correct pots of humbrol 155. but no sprays to be found. Would much prefer using a spray as my skill at dabbing tends to leave marks and mess.

Going to try B&Q and/or Halfords to see if they have a close colour aproximation

Or this guy does bags of cork on their own or cork and aerosol.

No worries, but if you're stuck, give me a shout, I have about a kilo of the stuff lying unused.

Hell, if I find a baggie I'll just go ahead and send you some cork - it's pre-ground to the correct size.
