I picked up a cheap postwar liner for my M1c conversion as it was hard to find my size online (and it was £3) and I was wondering if the black leather chinstrap was used on wartime helmets?
I've seen pics of helmets with what appears to be a black chinstrap but this could just be due to age or wear.
if its the thin one, that goes over the front of the steel shell, if you rub it down with some fine wet and dry, you can dye it brown with boot polish. i was in the middle of doing this with a black one i had, but just as i got it a nice brown colour,,,,, it broke.
that's the one. I'll give it a go.
It'll probably help that I got a modern liner with a chinstrap that's hardly been used. Was yours a ww2 strap?
You couldn't find a liner in your size?! They're all the same!
not sure..... it was boot polished black, so once i cleaned it all off to a nice raw tan leather colour, it was easy to just punish it unmercyfull with brown polish.

Ah now that's the WW2 liners. Mine is from some random M1 shell, it's plastic. has an odd leather adjustable insert like a FJ helmet and size marked 56-58. I have a tiny head. It's Really comfy too.

So I see from your avatar...
yep a 56 is pretty small.
I thought I was going to have to find cadet's kit, or the kid sized helmets that the germans issued to the volkstrum!

Sounds like you have a Post War Bundy or Austrian liner there.
