Well, despite swearing blind that my Meindl boots would be fine and much more comfortable than WW2 type boots I have given in and bought a couple of pairs of roughout boots from Epic. Well, the gaiters didn't really fit around modern walking boots so a pair of roughouts was really a necessity. Honest guv . So, a pair of size eights and a pair of nines. The idea was to return the pair that didn't fit. The eights in this case.
That was the plan...
However, I decided to apply some Chelsea dubbin and proceeded to apply it to one of the nines. Looking good but seems to drink the stuff up. Anyways, after letting the dog out i came back to do the other boot and got half way through when I though, "Hang about this looks a bit small". Sure as fate I had dubbed an eight and a nine. Fanny
No real option but to continue on and do both pairs! They've only got two coats at the moment but should have two or three more by the weekend. So I now have a pair of brand new dubbed roughouts in an eight going spare.
As far as comfort goes they're okay, better than expected, but certainly the least comfortable pair of my boots I currently have! Liveable with but the only pair the gaiters really fit.. I'm sure they'll wear in though and are still much more comfy than my eighties issue combat boots.

Heh, well they will get more comfortable.
Wladek and CHThree both wear their roughouts as their everyday shoes.
I slip in a set of "surefeet" insoles for a bit of extra comfort.
Yes, good point. I have extra insoles in mine as well.

So do I. Love them.

a couple of coats of dubbin and they look a fine dark brown.

New leather boots will take 5 or 6 applications of dubbin. Leave about a day between applications. If you overdo it on the dubbin the leather becomes sticky and a bit too soft though.
Don't be shy of putting the odd application of good old polish.
Dubbing keeps the wet out fine but polish adds a depth of colour.

Thanks Wladek, good to know. Any one repro version better than the other? (SoF, Epic, etc..)
There probably are, I have worn my SoF ones for 3 years or so, but had to re-attach the sole once or twice... They were not designed to last forever back in the day either.
Sorry I missed this. Apparently 'real life' is more important than airsoft stuff - who knew?
The boots are indeed a nice dark brown colour and I've found that they need quite a lot of dubbin as after I've worn them there appear to be dry spots. I just redub them. I used polish on them too and it darkens down the threads quite a bit.
I've ended up buying insoles as well. However, since they were never made with insoles in mind I've found that you'll need really thin ones if you have a high instep - I've got a pair of Scarpa ones. The superfeet ones are nice but I can't get my head round thirty five notes for a pair of insoles, especially if they don't fit...

There's a difference?
BTW my roughouts came from Motion Picture Props, but I don't know if they still do them, they're not on the website. They've lasted me 3 -4 years including day to day use, airsofting and reenacting with nothing dropping off or splitting. Might need new heels sometime though, they are looking a bit worn down.
