I've seen one of one member of a pathfinder group wearing the 5 cell pouches like this.
SoF used to offer such a rig, 2x5 cell pouches and extra straps to fit. I think even SoF 'the home of dubious' have stopped stocking it.
Like the Brit airborne guy with the drop pistol holster, it's a one off, not normal use.
Perhaps not one off but unless you do pathfinder a GP or thompson ammo bag is a better bet.

big item in BOB the road to hill 60, and earned in blood though ,
Don't think any of them did it in BoB, it was in Brothers in Arms though, there was a big screen shot of someone wearing on of the chest rigs.
Not worth getting unless you were going to do pathfinder, and even then you'd probably just be better putting them on normally.

TBH, it's a total pain in the ass if you fit it there too. Gets in the way of everything.
I think mainly Pathfinder units that did that anyway, there was a bit of a debate on here about people portraying pathfinders.
502nd Pathfinders, as you can see a few chest rigs there but I couldn't find any other pictures of normal troopers.
I think Webby has one of the chest rigs for his 82nd kit, I seem to remember him spending a lot of money on 10 x 20rd Thompson mags for it.

They were generally issued to pathfinders. The 'America's Finest II' book, has pictures of all the PF units in the 101st, 95% of the guys have them..Though im sure a few regular troopers got hold of them. I will be buying one in the future, for a possible pathfinder look.
Not just restricted to the Pathfinders, you have to make a few modifications to your rig setup. You get 2 straps with the suspender end clips on it, and press 2 holes in the mag pouch underside, you get some of the same at the top to connect to the D-rings on your suspenders.

Erm.. Webby...
If I remember right wasn't that set up with tie-wraps?
Cable ties yes (I used your multi-tool to cut them off) but thats how you're supposed to do it
Are you sure?
Cable ties were first made by Thomas & Betts in 1958.

I always heard that PIR got the latest kit, but that's taking the piss a bit.
Dont make me come over there Richard! lol!
In Spiers' PF image are they wearing 30rnd pouches or 20rnd ones? In addition, I notice they've got them attaches so that the flaps open away from the centre, which makes sense 'cos it'd be difficult to open and get the mag out otherwise - Webby, you seem to have yours on the wrong way

It's not too bad actually, its easier to draw the mag out of the right hand bank from your sternum to your left breast, rather than extending your left arm from your left breast outstretched to get the mag out. I copied how Corrian had it on BiA, I'd not seen the picture Spiers put up.
SOF have the mags that way around too:
The Guy on the far left of the pic has his mags that way around too, i think every1 else looks like they only have 1 side done (other side prolly on the belt)
Then again, the guy in the middle has them facing outwards, so it might be down to personal preference? And they're all 20 rounders
Guy 2nd in from the left has a grease gun, so i would imagine he'd have the 30 round pouches on his belt
i have mine vertically but use the three magazine ones and i don't have a problem with it being in the way or anything like that, it's each to their own i suppose just wherever is comfortable.
with the five magazine ones i can see them being a bit restrictive but the three's just tend to move slightly so they are out of the way when you move but always easy to get to aswell (see pic)
