Hiya guys.
I've digging out some old kit so I can put together my ww2 load.
I found my old 'Vietnam' helmet. Under the cover I found an symbol which I think is a Ranger one.
White/faded yellowy orange diamond with a black no 2 in the center.

How can I ID that this is a genuine ww2 lid? Any tell tale signs?

It's covered in a green sand like substance.

Cheers.

Isn't the acid test for M1s rim edge seams & strap bales?
Fixed bale & seam at the front=WW2 era, swivel bale & seam at the rear=post WW2.

Not quite.
Fixed bales + stainless steel rim with front seam is certain to be WW2 era
Swivel bales + stainless steel rim with rear seam is certain to be WW2 era
Swivel bales + steel rim with rear seam might be late WW2 but other checks need to made to be sure, could well be much later.

I see.

Isn't there also some stuff about the helmet profile? The WWII ones are supposed to be "taller" in profile.

Might aswell ask it here. I want to get an original liner for my new helmet. Been looking on J murray. Mines a fixed d-bale M2 type helmet. J murray sells 2 types of liners, but im not sure which type would fit in with the era my helmet is from.

Any clues?

Seems to be a 1944 McCord one.

If it were real I'd have to try and sell it to pay for the rest of my kit
All those loverly bills are rolling in.

Gotta' get a camera.

Regarding the helmet profile. No, they're essentially all the same, it's the bales and rims that are different.

Honestly guys. This has been discussed several times, and the links I posted earlier will give you all the information you need but you need to READ THEM!!! :slap:

Yeah i dont mind spending the cash on the appropriate liner...Ive got a cheaper repro liner already, so i wanna get an original. Just want to match the liner with the age of my helmet. Been looking for a while, So i have read the links already, but liners aren't my speciality.

Im thinking westinghouse, but another opinion would be good.

I am not disagreeing with you headshot because you clearly know a lot more about this sort of thing than me but I have seen certain correspondence regards the different profiles of the M1 through the ages. After a quick search I found this just in case you are interested? (read the first three lines under history)...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1_Helmet

I know wiki cant be trusted 100% but there are references to it from other sources as well.

So there may be some truth behind the shells being made lower, I dunno??

I have been told many times about the profile and at one time i owned 50+ M1s(still have around 20)and to be honest if it is true you would be hard pressed to notice if indeed there was any difference so i would say to anyone worried or concerned not to be as if there is a difference its not noticeable so dont worry about it :good: :good:

I agree. I also have a suspicion that my M1 helmet is a postwar shell and a WWII liner, since the liner keeps falling out of the shell.

No, it's a Danish surplus helmet.
