Cheers

Can anyone tell me if officer collar tabs all had the silver trim cord?
From what i know officer unit/rank tabs ALWAYS have silver trim. Turned to my "Bible" on this matters (Robin Lumsden's SS Regalia) and states as follows "The wearing of collar patches did not always conform to regulations ... and officers often used other ranks patches on the field, or removed the cording from their own patches..."
My local supplier have ones stitched in silver (Prinz Eugen in this case) supposedly for officer use without the silver trim.
Now i'm confused and don't want to give my money away for something probably not correct. HELP PLEASE!

Best regards

There's a whole thread with photos here:

Some show tabs with trim

others seem to show them without

I can think of 2 reasons why officers wouldn't wear the trim, the first is lack of availability later in the war or more probably most front line officers would want to avoid wearing anything that made in easy for the enemy to identify them as officers as that tends to make them bullet magnets, of course away from the front line they'd wear as much bling as they could to impress the girls

Thought it was only NCOs who had tresse ? Both officers and NCOs would often disguise their appearance to be like enlisted men, so as to present a less obvious target to snipers. The removal of tresse, reversal of shoulderboards, wearing of EMs uniform parts, etc.

Albano, unless I've misread your question, you've already had the answer from your book and the research you've done. There is no right or wrong, examples of both can be demonstrated in period photos.

I think the lack of piping is more likely to be either an austerity measure during production or else an affectation of certain officers in certain units. It doesn't make any sense to pick off collar tab piping in order to avoid the attention of snipers, but still wear great big silver braid shoulderboards.

Agreed, shoulder boards are much more of a signal that a couple of millimeters of piping. If it's hard to spot on photos what chance would a rifleman have.
