I'm leaning closer to the Dark Side here... got lots of 'captured' Gerry kit and am thinking of an Axis load out. I wanted a non-volunteer, non-German unit fighting on the Eastern Front who managed to avoid spending their spare time slaughtering the local civilian population.
I came up with these guys - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20th_Waffe ... stonian%29 but am struggling to find either reference sources or somewhere that sells the right badges. Can anyone of you experienced Landser or Gruppe veterans assist an Axis newbie? This includes suggesting a different unit!

Why not do 9th SS? A lot of its' members were Hungarians and were not indicted or convicted of any war crimes. The Estonian and Latvian SS units however were linked with a great many atrocities, particularly against Jews.
9th SS also fought on both fronts, against Americans, British AND Russian forces at various stages of the war, which is very handy for our gaming purposes. The Estonians, Latvians, etc, were eastern front units with a poor (at best) reputation.

Have a look at the 5 ss division, Wiking, that's what ive gone for, served on the eastern front with no war crimes proved " please correct me if i am wrong anyone, cos i'm not 100% sure" and not a bad war service history.
I seem to remember reading that some elements of Wiking were linked with the einsatzgruppen on the eastern front. Can't remember where I read it, will try to find it. It's a difficult one, the eastern front, as it was such a brutal place and hardly anyone came out of it "clean", even Heer units (of course, it's always the Waffen SS who get the bad press, deserved or not).

The problem is, that it's sometimes possible to justify doing terrible things in the heat of battle (not taking prisoners in a rapid advance, or house clearing, for example) but it's pretty inexcusable to round up unarmed civilians, minority and religious groups and just exterminate them. It happened on both sides, of course but it's very dodgy ground when it comes to deciding which unit to portray.

why another feckin SS unit? ...put bluntly you'll spend half your time trying to explain which elements weren't involved in which massacre. Take Kavsters advice, do Heer and be proud of it .

Here you go, can't go wrong with Anthonys' starter kit really. Most affordable loadout as well!

err I just did a deal and now have an SS Majors uniform from Hanibal Rising, it has Wiking on the sleeve and is a green wool with, take it thats 5th then? am so unknowledgeable on German kit
hope to get the correct Jack boots and be able to play Axis when i get back from Prince of Persia (about 36 weeks away!!)
