Dave,

We're now getting an error whenever someone posts an reply to a thread that would send out a notification email. (or for that matter any automated email sending)

Failed sending email :: PHP ::

DEBUG MODE

Line : 234
File : emailer.php

This appears to be down to the hosts "sendmail" program rejecting our email on the server. I suspect its not something we can sort ourselves... do we have any sort of tech support with the host we're using?

I've done some investigation and found this...

http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article.php?article_id=325

Its pretty important as any new users will not be receiving their registration confirmations!

This is the relevant section

If your seeing this error, that means your host must of disabled the sendmail function on the server or just your account. The one thing you should do though is to first talk to your host as to why it was disabled. If he or she will not enable it, then continue on.
Now, to start off, you'll need your SMTP settings that you have gotten from your ISP. (Note: AOL servers will not work at all so, don't bother trying with an AOL account.) If you don't know your SMTP settings or you don't have an email account to use for SMTP, then ask your ISP for the information and such.

There have been some dumped emails - Guy's to AOL account which seems to have been sorted now plus one other chap chrisnevisn@ntlworld.com which is a 550 mailbox not found.

Other than that everyone else is getting their notifications as far as I can see...

Right, I see what you mean - could you turn off the post notification email funtion temporarily?

As a starting point- as there has been no problem up to now is there anything you have done with the phpBB this morning?

There is no option to do that.

Nothing at all.

The most I can say is that this is probably the busiest time we've had on this server and hence its entirely possible that the host has a limit on the number of emails that can be sent and its that that as caused this to happen!

OK, email notifications of new posts can only be turned off in your own profile then?

Have you done a mass mailing by any chance?

Hmmm, seems to have cleared up now! Don't think there is a quantity restriction on emails - I've sent out over 1,000 in one hit with no prob before....

Did you do anything?

This is something we need to watch...

Any chance of getting the SMTP server settings in case we need to switch in the future?

No, I didn't do anything.
That bulk mailing must have been a while ago so probably unrelated (thought it might have been some anti-relay thing).
As it's now gone I guess it was just a glitch in the mail server - perhaps a slight delay that phpBB doesn't like?
Is there anyway I can see the mail settings on phBB - a screen grab maybe?

The mail settings are basically just "Use sendmail" thats all you need.

If we switch to using smtp we would need: "host", "port", "password". it would be good to do this as a backup solution.

OK - I'll set up an SMTP account just for the forum use.
