Thanks Gadge. Deleted one myself last night too.

I remove spammers every day, though it's rare that they get as far as posting as they use dummy email addresses and so never get the permission to post. As usual, I have deleted the username/account and blocked the generic email account (almost always some crappy anonymous email service - *.e-mail.com for instance or a dodgy one such as *.ya.ru so easy to spot).

I'd say we are doing pretty well though, rarely more than one attempt a day. Looking on the bright side - spam is an indication of our visibility on the web, which is good thing, perversly!

As I've said before that achieves nothing... A mod can't tell if a user is real or not either.

Hmmm... its actually probably time to make some more subtle changes to the site...

but it *does* stop someone joining at 3am and puting hardcore pornography all over the site with no mods able to remove it til they wake up rich.

also the url homepage 'ww.viagraisgood.com is a bit of a giveaway.

It definatley will cut out 9 out of 10 of the spammers we have had so far as yo have to go to the effort of making a vaguely convincing spamn profile and not just 'ticking boxs' automatcially.

I doubt most folk would be bothered if they knew it was checked.

To be honest I reckon we should probably upgrade to the new version of phpbb... This is now possible since we have a new version of MySQL on the new server.

It'll take some effort to do so I suggest we wait until after Wotan.

Since Gadge seems to be online most, perhaps we should up his admin privileges so that he can delete users... what do the rest of you think?

I delete users every day - I am intelligent and can work out for myself who is real and who is a spammer, it really is very simple.

Most spammers never get to validate the email address as it's made up - no problem, just delete and add to the ban list.

If it's a bulk valid email account, no problem just delete and add the address to the ban list (you will see I have put many generic and literal addresses there already). The more that gets added to the list the less likely they are able top post.

One or two a week gets though and actually posts something - usually one of us is there to delete pretty swiftly.

The 100% certain way of stopping this is a manual validation as Gadge says, I have said this already and indeed instigated it only to have Rich turn it off.

I absolutely insist that this is the route we go down from now on. No fiddling, no mods, no upgrades. Simple - if they don't get [past admin, they don't get on the forum to post.

I protest strongly that it is a bad idea.

My wory was that what i deleted wasnt just annoying spam it was potentially very bad for us and had been there all night (a full page of 'teen' models taking it up the wrong one etc NOT just a link to cheap viagra)
I did sugest to rich temporary manual approval until he could figure out s foolproof spam block.

but hey i'm no expert.

Althoughi am stepping down fomr cia after wotna,im more than happy to continie to keep an eye on things and mod the forum if required.

There is no "foolproof spam block".

Its impossible... Its like trying to chase the end of a rainbow.

I see that someone has enabled the manual "bullshit" account activation mode.

I see I'll get plenty of spam now... great. (sarcasm)

I won't be doing anything towards this as I disagree with it entirely...

Its up to you guys to do the manual activation... so good luck!
