Yeah, retailers always put in their markup on less common items knowing that you have no option to go anywhere else.

Fair enough uk stores are sorting out shipping import taxes but these are just on the wholesale value not their retail value. To be honest I'm not too bothered by this as I've run several importing stores and know how much work goes into it. Plus you have to factor in the business costs like staff etc and then offer certain guarantees as it's an electrical item. Some retailers over here offer really good value, others really take the piss.

but.

you still have the opportunity to buy from abroad and save loads but you risk problems. Plus some retailers have agreements with manufacturers to only sell to certain countries.

I once knew a clothing store that was selling a shirt that was $50 from the manufacturers website, it was $16 wholesale. In her uk store it was £75, she put this down to postage costs!
