Go for the P90, not the AK... I can't see a 10mm-20mm lump at the top looking any good.
What are you going to make the tripod from?
I find M14 gearboxes work fine for 1919A4's.

Free speech is expensive these days!

And I reckon I can replicate it's function: AFAIK the "ears" are the safety and have to be pushed back and up by the two trigger/middle fingers which then allows the trigger "oval" to be pushed forwards.
Does anyone here have experience with the real Vickers? I'd just like to check that I've got my facts straight and I'm not making a major fluff-up at any point before I start putting bits together!
The safey "ears" have to be lifted up (fingers behind, and pulled/swung 'back'/'towards you'), allowing the oval trigger to be pushed underneath.
My Vickers I built is a near-as-dammit dimensionally correct, built using nothing but hand tools (manual and power tools),a dremel, and materials bought from Wikes and B&Q!
I use a version 1 gearbox (FA-MAS) in mine, as they're strong, fit (mounted up-side-down), and have a good RoF (also, you can buy old FA-MAS's off of ex-n00bs, who always choose them as their first gun, pretty cheap when they move onto owning an M4...)
Funnily enough, I'm currently rebuilding my spade grips and trigger section - trying to make it look more realistic and dimensionally correct.
I have many plans, blueprints, dimensions, etc... if you ever get stuck and ask really nicely ![]()

im building a maxim machine gun too, we should get together and compare ideas! im using a 1.5mm solid steel pipe section welded to a box section for the reciever, its going to be a slight cheat as all im doing is bolting a cyma ak into my box and pipe section. couple of guys turned up with one they had made for a ww2 game and it was just a pipe section and box section welded together with an ak inside, they had it on a solokov wheeled mount, its was mega! i though well i can do that then i found a suitable pipe and box section in the scrap bin at one of my customers. the handle and motor section will be visible out of the bottom of the gun plus the mag when fitted but ive chose to make a correct thumb push operation to fire the gun plus it will automaticaly feed the auto feed electric 1000rd ak mag, also using a high speed gearbox and motor so should be a feared weapon. im happy to slow things down abit but going up against somebody using a thompson upgraded then i need something fairly hefty. also got a bullet proof quick fit shield to go on the front so i dont get blasted to pieces and a quick disassemble tripod to move it around, it might yet get a solokov mount. weapon might sound heavey but its no heavier than my m60 was plus the front shield is made of alluminium so not heavey at all.
can easily sling gun over my shoulder and run with it, believe me im a weed! does however need 2 of us to move the gun, tripod and shield, most in keeping with the spirit of things i think. ive added correct detail to both sides on the gun including fake cacking handle ect..
its not had alot of though to be honest though, kind of made it up as i went along but i can weld and form metal easily enough so im just made bits up as required. the ak inside can be adjusted to move up and down and fire in a straight line then locked into place so it wont move. im also using 2 switches to fire the gun incase one packs up. the original ak controls are still there and can be used to set the gun to semi for chrono-ing. havent had time to make a period tripod so its sitting on a tripod i bough from a shop for a halogen lamp to fit on, have made correct shape feet for it and i can adjust it so gun can be fired from a sitting down position as per original and elevated up to be fired from a window, very handy indeed. i have 3 or 4 photos, will get them up after ffz ww2 game, should have its first outing there. let me know if you want anymore details on this build. cheers. john.

As a bit of inspiration; here's some pics' of my Vickers halfway though it's receiver rebuild a few months back. It's been designed so that the airsoft feedblock (with BB transfer pipe) can be removed and a RS feed block fitted for display - N.B shown in picture with no feedblock fitted! Also, currently getting the cocking handle to cycle round as it fires! The chains on the tripod legs are usually hidden with sandbags or earth. Everything has been scratch built from materials available at DIY shops:

it looks the tits, much better than mine.

I'm using a P90 Ver 6 GB turned upside down with a modified P90 hop-up unit.
Good good!
I used an upside down FA-MAS (Ver 1) gearbox in mine when I first built it.
The feed will be a cut-down hicap at the bottom of the receiver feeding into the hop-up unit with a fabricated feed tube, and the hicap will be fed from a large reservoir which will take up the upper receiver.
Excellent! That what I did with mine! I had an old G3 hi-cap mech located behind the gearbox and ran a long feed tube down the side of the receiver (inside where the fusey-spring cover was to be!) to an upside down hop unit. I made the G3 hi-cap reservoir hold 250 rounds (a belts worth) which could be re-filled from an external feed pipe in from the feed block.
Once I'm free of the exams, I'll start posting pics up of my progress.
Glad to hear it's progressing! I'm loving others getting some built. We'll have to get them all together to field an MG Reg' as some game!
Though to be honest, McVickers, your build puts the bar really high! I'm loving the tripod.
Hehe, cheers. She looks a lot better in real life - those dark photos aren't that flattering, and she's a lot more complete now than as seen in those photos...
The tripod is an old disco lighting tripod stand that I heavily modified and 'dressed-up'! The brass dial-wheel is actually 5 CDs (they're the right diameter!) glued together, sanded and painted!

haha too think that it once brought enjoyment too people on the dance floor now it brings you enjoyment and taking of life on the battlefield
seeing as the guns been done up more since these photos what have you sussed out for sights?
Kiwi airsofter, just pew-pewing.
what have you sussed out for sights?
Shame I didn't take photos of them when I was making it a short while back, but the front sight I made out of two strips of steel - one for the base 'mounting plate' and the other for the 'u' shape. Two bolts through the 'u' and then through the base, and bolted into the water jacket top. The heads of the screws are covered over in steel epoxy and shaped/filed to form the flat rectangular sight platform. The hardest part was filing the small rectangular hole in the right hand side for the windage/night-sight fittment (yes, the front sight will allow the attachment of original real-steel sight adapters!). Photos can be posted up tonight if you want?
EDIT: Photos added...

good job!

what we really need now is a sight with some trenches and we can start doing some ww1 games ,we'v got two vickers here and a maxim and a lewis in other threads, that gives both sides enflade mg's and the rest with rifles all we need is some heavy artillary,i wonder how hard a hawitzer is to convert to fire bb's hmm...... ![]()

Soooo apparently all my old posts have been deleted!
Anyhow, this project unfortunately had to be put on hold as I left the country for three years for family things. Back in the UK now and I'm just about getting settled again, so I'll be booting this back up!
To recap, from what I remember I was going to do:
1) PVC piping for the water jacket
2) Thick plastic sheet for the receiver and other details
3) P90 gearbox (Still got it!) mounted inside the receiver upside down
4) Custom built hop-up unit which will feed from the top and be adjusted from outside the gun (possibly via a hex screw under the receiver)
5) PVC piping for the tripod legs
6) Thick plastic sheet for the tripod body
7) Internal BB reservoir feeding a cut down motor-driven hicap which will then feed through a spring line to the hop-up unit
I'll be making use of 3d printing to help fabricate greebly bits but for the most part I reckon it'll be easy to fabricate parts in plastic.
I'm going to try for about 500-600rpm, probably with a 32tpa ferrite motor and standard 18:1 gears with a big 7.4v battery. Should give a nominal RoF around the 10-11 rounds a second mark.
Looks like it'll be needing a long inner barrel, probably around the 590-650mm mark, which would require a bore up kit to properly volume. I might, as much as I am loathe to do it, shift the gearbox/hopup/feed mech forwards in the gun to fit a 509mm barrel, which is about the limit of how long you can use a standard AEG full cylinder for.
To give that lovely beaten zone some range, I'll be flat-hopping it and the design I have in mind for the hop-up unit will be applying pressure directly from the top which will make using an extended flat nub easier.
Hopefully, with the mostly plastic fantastic construction, I'll be able to keep this lightweight and cheap. If I can design parts for the externals to be 3d printable or castable in plastic I'd even be up for making more of these for sale later down the line.
