OK - New thread just to share images for discussion, theory and ideas. I'm already sure the most difficult bit would be the opening up of the solid barrel which, after all is an integral part of the 1928 Thompson........
So - the piccies.
The replica (right side)
Split in two (upper and lower half - three screws)
The trigger group (lower half)

Last pics (for now)
Receiver (upper half) with the "working parts" in situ - Dummy cast bolt, spring and follower.
Receiver (upper half) with the "working parts" removed.

What's it made out of?
Drilling the barrel will be a pain. You'd need a gun drill of some sort, unless you replace it with a 3-piece barrel drilled in a lathe, or I have seen mention of wrapping resin or somesuch around a tube, then forming the outside of the barrel.

Material of manufacture : Potmetal.

It looks feasible, and i have considered using one in the past.
You'd have to mill out the inside front part of the top of receiver to wher it joins to the barrel to fit the hop unit. the barrel's not a massive problem to drill out.
Having said that, i'd rather not work with pot-metal if at all possible again, god-awful crap that it is!
why not mill out the bottom of the barrel, full length, 7mm wide, and over 3/4 of the way in, insert airsoft barrel, then milliput the channel, and use existing groves for a reference with a saw
"Take that you rotton helping of strawberry flan!"

now that option I'm liking JP - Because it's a one piee casting - joined to the body...... and milling a slot (whic will be coveredby woodwork and mainly facing down) is a good simple solution....
See there are two sets of people in this world. Those who instantly see a problem and those who see the same thing but instantly see a solution. As often said - "Do you see the glass as half full or half empty?" Thanks guys ..... keep it coming as I have the fulll front stocked one too.

My answer, as an engineer, is "It's twice as big as it needs to be".
To combine ideas: perhaps milling in the area covered by the fore grip, then drilling the rest - doesn't need a long, straight bit.
*EDIT* Just noticed that's not such a simple idea as the vertical fore grip doesn't wrap up around the bottom of the barrel. the bottom slot would need to be filled, but not to a high finish, I suppose.
I think your plan is good. In fact I think your one issue with the hop adjustment is a non-issue.
The hop adjustment on the tommy is on the lower receiver. Just use the cybergun one as it isn't different between the two guns anyway.
You could maybe use the hop adjusters themselves from the denix as they are different from the M1A1.
Your one problem is that the wood pistol grip from the denix would have to be hollowed out to be used with the cybergun... and it's probably not up to that.
Effectively the job is then to just replace the incorrect cybergun top receiver with the correct one from the denix.
Aha!
So there is alread a 1928 (of sorts) out there......... Hmmmmmm so - is it worth bastardising a Denix then? I can see they have used the M1A1 body (Side cocking lever) but looks to me like the gun is already there.... Best bet would be to machine some aluminium square section into a correct upper reciever........ n'es pas?
Found a review and a disassembly article....... Seems the Cyma Tommy is plastique majore...... Metal upper body but plastic lower reciever etc. - Might be feasible to use the two to make one nice looking functional piece..... Cos I'm thinking - "Where will the battery go?" and I'm thinking "Do I want a plastic pistol grip cos I'm gonna have to to fit a motor in".

Same as the Marui version.

Buy one of the existing wood kits. There's quite a few to choose from.
