Humbrol modellers paint should do the trick, applied with a brush then small piece of sponge, clean & de grease the plastic & abrade with fine wet & dry paper, use matt 29 as the base colour (dark earth) , when dry mix matt 29 with matt 33 (black) to make a darker colour, apply gently by dabbing it on with a piece of sponge, you want to get the excess off on a piece of paper first, when the sponge is nearly dry dab it on the grips, then when dry, mix more of the brown & black together to form a darker colour & dab it on again, let dry for 3 or 4 days, then finish of with a clear cote lacquer, first apply a light coat & let dry for 24 hours, then 2 more coats applied about 2 hours apart, if you try to put a heavy coat on it will react with the base coat, humbrol matt spray lacquer is quire durable, or try testors lacquer if you can get it, interestingly enough the bakelite version is actually painted over black plastic!
