Stumbled across this site yesterday, although I accept it's probably well known. Has a few reviews and helpful articles, particularly about fun stuff like re-staining your M1 stock (I'll be trying this at the weekend).

Our chum CharleyNovember is a forum denizen there, too.
I like the mp40 bit i might have ago at that,my Cocking handle goes all the way back anyway when the battery is not in.

Not much use if it won't fire though, eh?
I have an MP40 winging it's way to me as we speak, so might attack it with the steel wool at the weekend, too.

Is that how you get the worn look that makes it look abit silvery?

I reckon so. You could also drybrush some acrylic metallic paint onto it, I suppose. I'll probably use the steel wool, lightly, just on the raised parts. Normal use will do the rest.
Will have a go at that but slowly because nowing my luck ill get carried away would like mine to look like this -bakelite

I would be tempted to spray the whole gun dark mattalic grey, then dry brush silver & brown on it, ( brown to simulate light rust ) then laqquer the whole thing with testors matt laqquer
Yup, I did all my weathering over the original body finish, not by rubbing back to the metalwork. Used Games Workshop paints - gunmetal, silver colours and blue and brown inks.
To weather I gun... guess what I do?
I use it...
This produces the best weathering money can buy...
