ok so ive removed the black paint and re-finished the ally block between the forward wood sections and now im trying to decide if its worth trying to make it look like a two piece assy like the real one, this would involve milling down the surface dehind the sling swivel and makeing a saw cut a few mm deep up between the two offset parts, ive tryed to show what i mean in this pic but this is my first ever attempt at drawing on a computer picture, the single line up is the saw cut and the shaded arear is to be milled away.

otherwise its finished and on to the nextpart.

will probably leave mine as it is (aint got a milling machine
)
whats your method for using the casey's black? I tried it on my K98 outer barrel and wasnt impressed with the results, maybe I was going wrong somewhere?

i found that coating my 30 cal barrel took about 3-4 "coats" before i got the finish i was after. Applied, washed off, dried, repeat.

cheers
for the barrel i spun it up in the lath to first wet-n-dry it for a nice finish then used the birchwood casey on a cloth while spining on the lath.if you have a long bolt and a nut through the centre of the barrel you could do the same with a black and decker drill with the bolt thread in the chuch and the result beats anything else ive try'd with ally black, plus its easy.the other reason for trying this is that the end of the barrel that you see is very square cut where as real barrels are usually radiused on the end and its easy to radius it with a file and then wet-n-dry when its spinning.the other thing is this is nice ally not pot metal so the result is better.

i just finished the woodwork an metal today and if i say so myself WOW thats some lovely wood under that crappy stain ,looks stunning in the flesh, really tempted to elope with this one but i suppose i'd better give it back to il duce.

only pity is that removing the stain exposed all the wood filler in the stock,im afraid this one will never be able to be supported by the rear sling loop because almost the hole under section of the butt is a glued in piece were they must have drilled through when making the cavity for the battery
,not much i can do about it witch is a shame but otherwise it should be fine.

wondered why they didnt just use a stick battery. i got a Vapextech 8.4 1400 stick battery and it fits snug inside the garand cleaning kit hole, with no mods.

I've no idea why they made a larger cavity , I guess they wanted a conventional shape batt to fit but im with you a stick batt is an obvious choice and hardly a rare option.
i was comparing this to my no4 and by comparison the garand feels like you'r wielding a hole tree, its really chunky.

had a look down the inside of the stock on mine from both ends with a maglight, looks ok, no sign of drilling through where the motor goes, only thing I have noticed on this one is that the well for the large battery has been drilled out through the bottom of the stock?? then a 4 1/2 piece spliced in up to just behind the rear sling
the cavity for the battery on this one was done that way as well,i thought it was where they drilled through by mistake and then fitted a repair section
,i dont think that it would be wise to use the sling to carry it about as there's not much structure there ![]()
in the end i couldn't make that ally bit look any better because of where they milled out the socket for the wood connection so deeply it would have gone all the way through, but i did put a gas tube underneath.

ah rite
same method on each stock then
will just get the sling for show then
shame there isnt a way of putting a steel rod through it for strength into a fork shape either side of the motor, there looks plenty of room each side of where the motor goes? then use a stick battery?
was just a thought anyways
looks good
did you use a solid rod for the gas tube?
ahem the rod is plastic and came from the centre of a marui magazine bb loading tube, looked about the right size, just sprayed it black.
