dount forget lads the gas return/frount sight is a section 5 item so dount use this part, even if you can get hold of it !!

cheers warren. Cant see why it would be as its not part of the firing mech so to speak and know there are a fair few over here from the guy in the states who builds AEG garands.

I`m thinking about modding the Kart socom to a shortie Garand but the mag problem is putting me off for the moment ![]()
I just went on RSOV and found some M14 100 round midcaps (they look reasonably easy to cut down), so I thought I`d order a socom and 4 mags....then I remembered we`ve got a postal strike so I think I`ll wait a couple of weeks in case it gets bogged down in a dark corner of a sorting office ![]()

I'm currently doing a M14 to Garand conversion using a genuine stock, however looking at the parts I'm discarding I think it should be feasable to make a gas block assembly from those parts specifically the M14 gas block and the flash hider/sight assembly, I'll have a go when I've completed my Garand and let you know if it works.

I have instructions on how to shorten the mags, I will dig them out over the weekend and post some info on how to do it.
Reading the Canadian guy's instructions I have this to say:
PLEASE DON'T GO MODIFYING ORIGINAL GARAND PARTS.
I would think we all want our AEG garand to be as much like the original as possible. Better to modify the cheapsoft gun parts rather than qulaity high carbon steel, parkerised springfield made originals. You could build up the end of the shortened plastic stock using epoxy wood filler, shape it correctly and then fit the stock ferrule as it is meant to be fitted.
I used a wood M14 stock and stock carved the end to the right shape so the stock ferrule (with the sling swivel) fitted properly, so no tape is necessary to hold the stock in place, it takes down just like the real thing. ![]()
For the operating rod I used brass tube (1/2 inch I think - will check) for which I painted black with plastikote. The difficulty here is that the operating rod on the M14 is on a parallell , offset axis to the garand one. I used epoxy metal filler to connect it on a parallel axis to the existing M14 operating rod which was shortened so it would not protrude beyond the lower band. this involves shortening the spring guide and the spring I'll post a photo of that too, it's hard to describe. Anyway, it slides when the rifle is cocked, looks pretty cool.
My current issue is with how the m14 outer barrel fits with the gas cylinder. It is slightly too short and does not protrude beyond the cas cylinder so you can't thread the gas cylinder lock on to it. I am drawing up a design for an extension piece made of aluminium which will screw on to the outer barrel and will be threaded on the end so the gas cylinder lock will thread on to it, holding the whole assembly in place. I did fashion a part from Epoxy Metal but the end got t***ed at CR and broke, so it's back to the drawing board (well, CAD screen). I'm hoping a local engineering company can turn it out for me.
