Had a dig out in the shed, came across two plastic M14 stocks, one black, one green, now not much use for anything really so I thought I would try and convert one to make a passable M1 stock as I was going to make a wood replacement....but this might work out quicker.
The stocks are from the short version CYMA copies, I’ve used the guts on other conversions. They have a stippled effect and chequered grip sections. So a bit of 80 grit paper application to get rid of that. Surprised to find the black stock is a translucent white underneath!
I’ll be using some fibreglass for shape, and finish with some filler to get the shape I want, for now trying to find a base coat to apply a “wood” finish, will be using ‘scumble’ . I’ve used this before many years ago, and got some good results....didn’t even know it could still be bought! Good old eBay!
Did a bit more to this conversion, drilled and put in plasterboard screws, then chopped off the heads, to make and underpinning effect. The made a cardboard channel to which I applied some fibreglass.
This was done for lightness as I didn’t want to make it solid and add weight, after curing, made shape with some filler. Not too far off the shape I want now, looking like a Garand stock at least.
Did a bit more today, debating wether to get rid of full auto and lock to semi, will have to decide before I do “graining effect” on stock, but plenty to do yet.
I might have to give fiberglassing a go....
Did a bit more to this today, made a top wood and started on front too, shorter than your average M1, I’m going for the T26 look, or “tanker” as it’s wrongly called. I know they were never taken on as a gen issue rifle but apparently there were prototypes tested on battlefront situations.
Also did a little test on painted wood simulation.

A bit more done to the plastic stock. Base coat and darker shade patches, lacquered over and let dry for a couple of days, then applied graining effect, when this has dried, will apply more lacquer.
Top wood done, lacquered this also hoping it will match up some with the plastic effort.
Can’t seem to put pics up, will have a sort out and try later.
I’ve actually finished the “T26” M14 to M1 conversion, I think it looks good, but now I’ll have to go away and find a method of posting pics on the forum. I can’t work out what to do, so I’ll have to find someone who does know what they’re doing!
