OK I thought it was time I tried my hand at building my own MG34. I have converted a zib MG42 to airsoft, converted my MP40 to an MP41 and sawed up the wife's pine dresser to make 2 weapons chests, so in need of a new project I am building a MG34.
Since I do not have access to fancy machinery this is being built by hand with my drill, angle grinder and dremil. Materials will be aluminium- tube, box tube, plate, steel tube and the frame of my sons old bike . As for assembling it I am using rivets, small nuts & bolts and araldite.

Below is a pic of my progress so far. The barrel is 1.5" of aluminium tube, with the back end and smaller tube from my sons bike, the flash hider is made from the same 1.5" tube.

The foresight and flash hider lever is made with aluminium pieces sandwiched with araldite and pinned using pop rivet shafts. A spring from a disposable lighter and a piece of a rounded nail is inserted inside the foresight so it works as per a real forsight (see diagram).-- attachment is not available ---- attachment is not available --

If anyone is interested you can find a full blueprint of the MG34 here, no measurements but still a great blueprint

Progress so far. The bottom of the receiver has been made slightly bigger to enable the fitting of a version 3 gearbox which will help it align easier to the barrel. I have kept the left side intact to attach a drum mag bracket as making a feed tray is not viable as the gearbox and hop will be in the way, I will, however, make the part of feed tray that you can see at the ejection side. Small gaps and rivet holes are araldited and filled with epoxy resin then filed flush.

Things to do yet are-
Butt, Leaf sight, centre bipod bracket, top cover with locking mechanism, bipod barrel catch, sling swivel, cocking handle with slide and pistol grip.-- attachment is not available ---- attachment is not available --

Great work and looking good so far.. I don't suppose you could go into a little more detail of how you fabricated the receiver and exactly what out of, or would that be giving to much away at the moment. It just seems to have some great details on it, and was just wondering how you achieved it with what you said was minimal tools and materials.
Regards Chris.

No probs, the receiver is made of 2" square box aluminium with a section cut out the bottom for the gearbox, I used the same stuff to extend the bottom by cutting 4 strips of (approx 10mm thick x length of the receiver) and a full base to cover the bottom of the receiver. 2 x strips either side and the base were pop rivetted to the receiver then using an angle grinder I merged them at a slight angle as an MG34 is. The butt end of the receiver I cut out the corner pieces and hammered each side in a bit where I placed a 2" piece of steel pipe with a pop rivetted piece of smaller pipe inside with about an inch protruding, this slipped in the back of the receiver where it was pop rivetted.
The receiver length was cut to 16" (14" for the receiver and the other 2" for the barrel break and sight area), this 2" area is also where the barrel is fitted into and pop rivetted in place. I have used pieces of the box aluminium, 2mm aluminium plate and a 2" piece of broom handle to make this area as per the photos.
All rivet holes were counter sunk first before rivets fitted then filed flat and filled with a touch of araldite and then epoxy resin, when dried the area was filed flat to conceal the rivet area.

Tools used were- Angle grinder, Drill, Hack saw, Files.
Consumables used were- Pop rivets, Araldite, Epoxy resin.

Today I started on the Top cover, progress so far--- attachment is not available ---- attachment is not available --

Still incomplete as it needs rivet holes and gaps filling, then attaching to the receiver.-- attachment is not available --

Made the butt using pine pieces glued together, reason for using pine being its easier to carve and sand into shape and its all I had :slap:-- attachment is not available --

Looking good keep at it.

By the way did you have a template for the Stock or did you just get the measurements and start carving??

im a big believer in useing whats to hand,i use loads of recycled materials plus pine is light and easy to work.

No template, I have the length and height measurements which I placed on a piece of card then drew freehand from a picture of a wooden butt off the internet

Progress so far, have redone the front mounts so the bipod can be fitted. Also fitted rear dummy mounts which the bipod wont be used on. Have given it a lick of paint so I can see its overall look.

Things to do- A few cosmetic bits, bipod catch, rear sight, cocking handle, pistol grip, drum mag mount, feed tray ejection side and then it will be the airsoft internals

(Bipod is an original MG34 with stamps which I got from Ryton Arms)-- attachment is not available --
